Schooluniforms The last years, name brand clothes are very in the public eyes of youngsters. Lately I read an article in a youthmagazine, that every euro which is spent by youngsters, the half is spent on clothes. If you want to join the club, you will have to wear the right name brand clothes: Wonder Woman, Mexx, O’neill, Esprit, O’bleu etc. These clothes are extremely expensive. So you can understand that the average parent can’t pay this every month. This brings a lot of school-going youngsters in the problems. I know some youngsters who frequently steal clothes, because they want to join the club. So I understand that some people will introduce schooluniforms in the Netherlands. But I think it won’t be a good idea. In the first place I think that the pupils will make resistance if Schravenlant will introduce schooluniforms. In the Netherlands they don’t accept to wear schooluniforms as something normal, this in contrast with England. In England pupils have weared uniforms on schools for years. The Netherlands haven’t had that system on schools. Besides yougsters like to decide what they wear every other day. The many TV spots and other commercials are made to make us clear that we shall have to have a own style and that we must to distinguish from the rest of us. And that idea about schooluniforms and clothes, you can’t get out of the mind from the Dutch people. Further I think that schooluniforms don’t work so self-financing. On the contrary. In your spare-time you won’t wear your schooluniform but casual wear and besides you don’t have enough with one uniform. Schooluniforms needed to be washed too and a uniform for the summer is not warm enough for wearing in the winter. In fact you must have a double wardrobe: one for school and one for your spare-time. That means double expenses instead of less expenses. Finally I am afraid that there always will be groups. People have discriminated for years; if isn’t it by clothes, then it’s by skin colour, manner of talking or conduct. So when they have a reason: stop discriminating: introduce schooluniforms, they will make a great mistake. Because schooluniforms don’t stop the problem discriminating. My conclusion is that Schools in the Netherlands shouldn’t introduce schooluniforms. It will make resistance, it doesn’t decrease the expenses and it doesn’t stop the problem discriminating. Somebody wearing other clothes then you, is not an another dangerous dirty animal, it is and it stay a human. So we shall have to learn to judge the inward of persons and don’t judge the outward.
