Part 1. Story- analysis. Complete titledescription. The complete title of the book is Nineteen Eighty- Four, written by George Orwell. The book is published by Wolters - Noordhoff BV Groningen in 1998. This book is part of the Blackbirds- series 1998. Copyright by Eric Blair. This edition copyright by the estate of the late Sonia Brownwell Orwell, 1987. The design is created by UNA, Amsterdam by Mark Diaper. First edition in 1949. Author- information. George Orwell's real name is Eric Arthur Blair. He was born in 1903 in India. His father worked for the Civil Service. He went to Eton. He wrote articles for college magazines. He died in 1950. His book 1984 sold over more then two millions of copies. His other famous novel, Animal Farm, also sold over two million copies. He wrote this book because of his repulsion from fascism and communism. His other novels are: Down and Out in Paris and London, A Clergyman's Daughter and Coming up for air. Title- explanation. When Orwell wrote the book it was 1948. For him 1984 was just a date in the future. Summary. It is the year 1984 and England is ruled by the Party, it has became a dictatorship. The world is divided in three parts: Oceania, Eastasia and Eurasia. Britain lays in Oceania, but is called Airstrip One. Winston Smith works at the department of Minitrue, where he falsifies documents and changes the historical facts. He is one of the few people left, that is not happy under the reign of The Party. One day he buys a diary, an absolute crime, and he fears that the Thought Police will get him. At work there is a girl who he fears and suspects to be an agent of the Thought Police. When he walks on the streets, in the neighborhood of the proles, he sees her again and fears that he will get caught. But the next day at work she slips a piece of paper into his hands, with the words 'I love you". Winston is confused and doesn't know what to do. They meet some time later and make love. From that moment on they have an affair. Winston rents a room at the store of Mr. Charrington, where he and Julia meet. After some time, Winston runs into O'Brien, who asks him to come by his house to pick up a book. He goes there together with Julia, and they find out that O'Brien is part of the Brotherhood, who rebels against the Party. They join the Brotherhood, which is leaded by Emmanuel Goldstein. They read the book, written by Goldstein, in their rented room. Julia falls asleep and Winston to. When they wake up the next morning, a picture falls from the wall and Winston sees the telescreen behind it. Then Thought agents rush into the room and beat them up. Julia was taken away and Winston finds out that Mr. Charrington is an Thought agent too. Winston was arrested and taken to the Miniluv, where he is put in a cell with four telescreens watching him. Then O'Brien enters, and Winston finds out that he is an Thought agent as well. O'Brien tortures Winston until the agrees to O'Brien in everything and gives the right answers. Then Winston isn't tortured for a while. Then O'Brien walks back in and Winston tells him he hates Big Brother (The Party). Then O'Brien takes Winston into room 101, for the final step before reintegration. O'Brien shows Winston a cage of hungry rats (Winston is scared to death of rats) and the cages is fitted around Winston's head. Then Winston yells that they should do it to Julia and not to him. Considering that that was the highest form of betrayal (betraying your beloved ones) Winston is released. When he returns to the world he is a physical and psychological wreck. When he meets Julia, they both confess they've betrayed each other in room 101. Later, Winston realizes he loves Big Brother. Genre. Anti- utopia (utopia means wanting to change the existing system, a not to be realized vision of a perfect condition). Theme. The theme could well be Orwell's warning against a totalitarian state. When Orwell wrote the book, this was a very actual topic; Hitler's regime had just ended and Stalin's regime was more and more on the news. Motives. The motives are love, hate, confusion, total control and no control at all and rebbelism. Motto. There is no motto in this book. Idea. The ides of Orwell was to make people understand and aware of the dangerous situations that are going on in the world (meaning Hitler and Stalin) and that these kinds of kinds could also happen in Britain. Structure. The book counts 303 pages, and when one reads 30 pages an hour, one can read this book in 10 hours and a bit. The book has a epilogue, but no preface. Characters. The main characters are Winston (round character), Julia (round character) and O'Brien (round character).The most important one is Winston Smith. Orwell named his character after Winston Churchill. Winston is an 39 year old man, who works at the department of Minitrue. There Winston rewrites history. He has a secret love- affair with Julia, who is also against the system. Julia is a 25 year old woman who works at a special department of the Minitrue, which makes cheap porno for the proles. She is a simple woman who uses sex for fun and as an act of rebellism against The Party. O'Brien was thought to be a member of the Brotherhood, but turns out to be a member of the Thought Police, who takes care of Winston's rehabilitation. The other character is Big Brother (flat character). His existence is not certain, but he is said to be the big mind beyond The Party. Time. The story takes place in 1984. The telling- time is shorter then the told time. The story is told in a chronological order. Room. The story takes place in London, capital of Airstrip One. Where I got my information from. Ik schrijf de persoonlijke tekstbelevingen voor de tweede periode niet in het Engels, want dat kost toch de nodige tijd en tijd heb ik op het moment te weinig. Ik heb enorm genoten van dit boek. Ik heb me er niet doorheen hoeven worstelen, wat met de meeste boeken wel het geval is. Ik ben in het boek begonnen, omdat een goede vriend van mij het boek had gelezen en het een geweldig boek vond. Zodoende heb ik ook een poging gewaagd. Orwell gebruikt duidelijke taal en het boek is daardoor gemakkelijk om te lezen. Af en toe duizelt het van de informatie die hij in korte stukken tekst verwerkt, maar over het algemeen is het boek duidelijk te overzien. Alleen de woorden van de Newspeak zijn even wennen om te lezen, omdat Orwell het als de nieuwe Engelse taal invoert. Het onderwerp spreekt mij heel erg aan, omdat ik ook veel gelezen heb over Hitler en over Stalin, en je vind een hoop componenten van hun regime in dit boek terug. Orwell verafschuwde Hitler en zijn gemanipuleer en geindoctrineer. Orwell was bang voor zo'n systeem in Engeland en heeft op basis daarvan dit boek beschreven. Ook 'Animal Farm' is op dit thema gebaseerd. Het is zeer moeilijk voor te stellen dat iemand, of een partij, mensen zo kan beïnvloeden dat ze zelfs de gedachten van mensen kunnen bepalen, beperken en in een bepaalde richting sturen. Dat is bijna ondenkbaar, vooral na de ervaringen die men heeft opgedaan door Hitler en Stalin, en daarom is dit boek ook zo fascinerend om te lezen. Maar zoals bekend is, leert de mens niet van zijn fouten en dit is een beangstigend feit. De dingen die Orwell beschrijft zijn zo onwerkelijk, maar aan de andere kant ook even zo voorstelbaar. De mensen hebben geen eigen wil meer, geen privacy en geen controle meer over hun leven. Als Big Brother zegt twee plus twee is vijf, dan is dat ook zo, en geen vier. Wat een heel goed voorbeeld is, is dat de partij in een week het chocolade rantsoen verlaagd naar een x aantal gram, en vervolgens de volgende week verklaard dat ze het rantsoen verhoogde hebben naar datzelfde x aantal gram. Iedereen slikt het gewoon en neemt het voor waar aan. Ook het feit dat Oceania steeds wisselend oorlog voert met Eurasia an Eastasia en telkens verkondigd al vanaf het begin der tijd met een van hen in oorlog te zijn. Ze beheersen de toekomst, het heden en het verleden. Corresponderen de historische feiten niet met wat de partij propagandeert, word de geschiedenis herschreven zodat het wel klopt. Niets is waar, maar als de partij zegt van wel, wordt het waarheid. Daarom heb ik ook een enorm groot respect voor Winston. Hij heeft nog wel zijn eigen gedachtes en deze corresponderen niet met de ideeën van de partij. Al meerdere malen heeft hij bewijs in handen gehad dat de partij de geschiedenis naar eigen wil heeft herschreven en rebelleert tegen het systeem. Ik vind dat heel knap, want het overgrote deel van de bevolking gaat er wel in mee. Ik zou niet weten wat ik in zo'n situatie zou doen

Het gedeelte dat ik niet snap, is dat ondanks dat O'Brien Winston martelt, mentaal en fysiek, blijft Winston tegen O'Brien opkijken. Dat vind ik raar, want in zijn plaats, zou ik O'Brien verachten. Al die onzin die hij verkoopt, en als toppunt dat hij er zelf nog in geloofd ook. Daar kan ik echt niet bij met mijn hoofd. De minste sympathie heb ik dan ook voor O'Brien. Hij liegt en manipuleert Winston en Julia in de Brotherhood, om ze vervolgens te verwoesten. Maar aan de andere kant heb ik ook medelijden met hem. Want hij wordt ook gemanipuleerd door het systeem en is zodoende niet meer aansprakelijk voor zijn daden; dat wordt De Partij. Dit boek is een echte aanrader om te lezen. Je leest er gemakkelijk doorheen en het is nog interessant en leerzaam ook, en zet je aan het denken.
