Balloonning around the world
This is the story of Fosset, whose goal was to fly around the world in a balloon.
The first time Fosset took off he crossed the Atlantic in three days. He kept in contact with the rest of the crew by e-mail. When Fosset flew over Bolivia he had his first problem. He had to burn a lot of fuel to go down but he got through. On the 6th day he reached India. Even though he had an autopilot he got tired. After he had to go through another storm he broke his own record but he had trouble finding a good place to land. He had travelled halfway around the earth but his goal still was to fly around the whole world.
In december of 1997 he took off with an even bigger balloon in St.Louis. He had some problems with flying over Libie, but the Russians were very friendly. In 9,5 days he travelled 5000 miles. Another team beated him on the duration record.
Later, Fosset went to the Southern Atlantic to use a different strategy. It would be easier to fly from there because there are few countries who could disturb his flight.
When Fosset took off he was quite nervous and when he got in the air problems started immediately. Only 2 burners functioned. He tried to fix them but instead a fire developed. It was a dangerous situation but he flew on. The next problem was that he was using to much fuel on his way to Africa. He crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 3 days. The balloon had to go eastwards because otherwise it would have to fly through a windless area. Fosset was afraid he wouldn’t make it to Australia because he also had an oxygen problem. He did break his own distance record with 21725 km but he still had the same goal so he went faster. When he had to fly over another storm the situation got critical. His balloon started going down very fast. He tried to stop it by letting go of six tanks but it didn’t work. Unfortunately he didn’t have much recue stuff on board and he was far away from any rescue teams. He tried to send signals to the ground but nobody received them. The balloon was on fire and he luckily managed to get away from it. An Australian rescue team started looking for him and found him alive in his raft after 2 hours.
After another failed try to fly the world and after almost losing his life, Fosset still couldn’t give up.
He started a project together with Branson and Lindstrand but even though they combined their manpower they failed and had to land on Hawai.
In march of 1999 Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones did make it and so they were the first people ever that flew around the world in a balloon.
