Dear Rick,

I got your address from International Youth Service. I was very excited when I got your name because my first choice was an Australian bow.

Let me introduce myself first. My name is Maartje Lahaye, I am seventeen years old and I live in a town in the South of Holland. I have enclosed a picture of myself so that you can see what I look like. Now I’m in the fourth form of HAVO, which is a school of higher general secondary education.

At home there are three of us. I’ve got one brother, named Tim, who is thirteen years old. My mother is called Marjolein and she is forty-four years old. My father is a businessman and my mother is working in a lunchroom.
We live in a terraced house in a busy street, which I am satisfied with.

I’ve wanted to correspond with someone from another country for a long time because I am interested in the opinion of others and how they spend their time.
I told my English teacher and she likes the fact that I will write with someone from Australia. She thinks it is a good way for me to improve my English.

Let’s write each other by e-mail. That would probably be the fastest and easiest way.
How frequently would you prefer to write each other, once a month or more often?

Dear Elly,

I apologize for not being able to write you sooner. I was very busy because I have had many tests. I would like to congratulate you on your brother’s good examination results. He is undoubtedly enjoying his holiday now.

I still have to answer some questions of yours. Now I’m in the fourth form of HAVO, which is a school of higher general secondary education. There are approximately eight hundred students at my school.

I am glad that I get much responsibility at my school, but I am disappointed that I only know a few people there.

I am satisfied with my last three marks, which were for biology, Dutch and physics. My favourite subject is Dutch, because I like reading, writing and debating and because it concerns many subjects.

A classmate has given a talk on the education in England. How strange to hear that the students have to wear uniforms at most of the schools. What do you think of that?
