Summary

The film begins with Kenny and his family at breakfast. Then you see a suitcase transported with lots of supervision and security. Kenny leaves his family to go to his job at the White House. He is a special adviser for the President; John F. Kennedy. There is a party that has to be organised and Jacky, Kennedy’s wife takes care of it. Business as
usual is disturbed for a special meeting. It’s October,
1962, and U-2 surveillance photos made by the Americans have just revealed that the Soviet Union with Chroetsjov as the leader is in the process of placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. All of the White House is in high alert. Immediately all of the government members have to be gathered and called back from holidays in the Caribbean to discuss what has to be done about this shocking news. There are certain options that can be considered such as an invasion, a blockade, quarantine, US. military strikes such as an air strike. The main goal is to get the missiles out of Cuba and stop them from becoming operational. Kennedy doesn’t want to cause a nuclear war and certainly doesn’t want to be the one who starts it. He tries to prevent any attacks from the Americans towards the Cubans in order to avoid the Soviet Union from getting angry which might bring them to retaliate Berlin. There are others however who don’t have such a problem with going to war. Quote by Kennedy about his staff: “They want a war, Jack, and they’re arranging things to get one.”

As part of trying to get to a solution by means of meetings, the schedule of the president has to be cleared in a subtle way so that the press and others don’t get suspicious. It is however impossible to cancel a meeting in Chicago. After that he leaves and lets the press now he’ll be having a cold for the next couple of days. The press however does get suspicious and start to make up their own stories. The president himself has to call the head of the newspaper to hold their story until Monday 19.00 o’clock.
In the meantime Kennedy goes to the congress and asks for their support, which he doesn’t get. Kenny persuades him to take a minute and relax. Even though the president said he didn’t want “any of that goddamn peptalk”, Kenny gave him the peptalk. Slightly relaxed he goes to the room where he gives his speech on television. He tells the people about the situation and how he wants these missiles to be removed from Cuba. He makes clear that he will take the measures necessary to make that happen.
In the meantime it is decided that that there will be a quarantine to prevent Soviet boats from reaching Cuba. Several air pilots are called up to hear that they are ‘not to be shot down’, meaning that they are not allowed to give America any reason to have to attack the Soviets back. The first few planes are shot at. They have still been able to take the pictures they needed and they simple lie about the shootings.
