Apartheid timeline1948 Alan Paton publishes the book Cry, The beloved country
The national party (NP) was brought to life in, and they were the main cause of the black segregation. Most of the white men in South Africa found apartheid justified because otherwise the black people (2/3 of the South African population) would take the power, and do the same thing to the white. The national party legislated several laws to decrease the freedom of black people in South Africa.
1964 On the 12th of June, Nelson Mandela got lifelong for being a member of Umkhonto We Sitzwe (the military department of the ANC). Nelson Mandela was the leader of the liberty movement the African National Congress (ANC). He was taken to Robbeneiland. There he became the symbol for the black resistance against apartheid.
1977 Steve Biko was arrested and interrogated 4 times and died in a police station (by cause of violence during one of his interrogations. This led to the growing resist to apartheid in foreign countries. Steve Biko was an anti-apartheids activist who started the South African Students Organization (SASO). The SASO supported the black population with medical aid, employment and judicial support.
1984 Desmond Tutu, bishop of Johannesburg, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work against apartheid.
Desmond Tutu was one of the spokesmen against the apartheid. He gained support especially from foreign countries.
1989 Frederik Willem de Klerk was elected as president of South Africa.
Fredik de Klerk was a member of the National Party, and was at first for the apartheid, but when he was elected as president of south Africa, he turned the path to freedom of the black in south Africa. He released the political prisoners Sisulu and Mandela.
1990 Nelson Mandela was freed from his prison on Robbeneiland.
1993 Frederik de Klerk and Mandela both received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.
1994 The ANC (legalized) won the elections, with nelson Mandela as president.
1996 The Truth commission was established with Desmond Tutu as chairman. The Truth commission was established to gain a clear view of the misbehavior of people during the apartheid.
