V2: Excuse me, I have a question. I’m visiting Canterbury, but I don’t know where to go. What would you certainly visit if you were me?

V1: I would go and visit Eastbridge Hospital.

V2: Oh I have heard of it, but I don’t know what it is exactly.

V1:

Uitleg over Eastbridge Hospital.

S: I’m sorry that I interrupt your conversation, but I’d like to add something. I think Eastbridge Hospital is really boring !!! You shouldn’t go there! Go to St Augustines Abbey, it’s much more interesting!
Saint Augustine was sent from Rome to England to reconvert the English people to Chritianity by Pope Gregory the first. in 1568 the Abbey and all it's posessions surrendered to the Crown and under the instruction of Henry the eighth they started pulling down the Abbey. But the Abbey is still there and it can still be visited. You should go there it's really interesting, and there's a great museum the entrance to the Abbey grounds.
St. Augustine was very important for the English history as he brought Christianity to England, and the Abbey is a great monument!

M: Oh, a tourist. Can I give you some advice?

V2: Sure.

M: West Gate is a nice place to see. I think it’s the most important thing to visit in Canterbury!

V1: That’s not true, Eastbridge Hospital is better!

S: Yes, but St Augustines Abbey is the best, because it's a really important monument, in 1989 the U.N.E.S.C.O made it world heritage for its outstanding universal value. It's really one of the most important ruins of the world.

M: Don’t you listen to them, they don’t know what they are saying. I’ll explain to you what you can see when you go to West gate. It is a fortified gatehouse, one of England’s finest! It was built by Archbishop Sudbury and finished in 1380.

S: The Abbey was allready founded in 598, everyone who has ever been to Canterbury should go and see it.

M: You can even visit the Guard Chamber, Murder Holes, Civil War Armoury and City walls display.

S: at St. Augustine's Abbey you can visti both a Saxon and a Norman church, and the remains of a Royal Palace built by Henry the eighth for Anne of Cleves when she was on her journey from France. And there is also a very beautiful museum

M: It is part of the old wall that once surrounded the city. Only part of it still exists. It is the largest surviving city Gate in England.

S: St. Augustine's Abbey is one of the oldest Abbeys in England, it's a real monument from earlier times.

M: It was used as a prison for many years but it has been a museum since 1906.

S: In the museum of the Abbey you can see over 250 objects found on the ground where the Abbey stands, including objects from the famous scriptorium, funeral items, and there's an interacitbe audo and visual interpretation provided in six different languages

M: There is an arch in it and buses just fit between it!

S: It's only a very short walk from the bus station, only five minutes away from the Cathedral, and a pleasant walk from both East and West train stations.

M: You can enter it and go to the top for some great views of the city.

S: there's a famous scriptorium, where there are written over 2000 books, a big part of them was listed in the librabry of the Abbey, unfortunately only 200 of them survived the destruction of Henry the eighth

M: The admission is only one pound!

S: That's because there's nothing to see there, the admission for the Abeey two pounds, but children only pay one pount, and groups pay 15 percent less.

M: Don’t bother trying to convince her to go to St Augustines Abbey, she has alredy made up her mind, she’s going to West Gate!

S: That’s not true, you can see on her face that she doesn’t feel like going there, she wants to visit St Augustines Abbey!

V1: No , she wants to see Eastbridge Hospital.

M: Eastbridge hospital? Why would she go there? It’s just a hospital, there sure are plenty hopsitals too wherever she comes from! But West Gate is unique!

V1: It’s not an ordinairy hospital, (reden om toch naar Eastbridge Hospital te gaan)

S: just go to the Abbey, you won't believe your eyes, it's really impressive.

V2: Okay, okay, stop fighting, I’ll visit all of them!

M: That’s a great idea, but she’s going to West Gate first, isn’t she?

V2: (draait met haar ogen en zegt) Yes (om van M vanaf te zijn.)

S: Have fun visiting that stupid gate!

V1: … and that wonderful hospital.

V2: Bye!
