Endangered species
Because there are a lot of endangered species I took three kinds of endangered species; I chose the African Elephant, the Giant panda and the Gorilla.
The elephant
The elephant is the largest living land animal, with adults sometimes weighing six tons or more. Of the two kind of elephants is the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) larger and more plentiful than the Asian Elephant although both are threatened by shrinking living space and poaching for the ivory trade. There are 300,000 to 600,000 African (in 37 range countries) left in the wild.
They are generally peaceable, slow-moving, sure-footed creatures, but can run at speeds up to 25 miles per hour or even swim underwater using their trunks as snorkels if they need to.
Smell and touch are perhaps their most keen senses, and their hearing is also surprisingly acute. They can communicate across distances of several miles using rumbles below the range of human hearing (infrasound). Even from a distance they can warn each other of impending danger or co-ordinate movements toward food and water.
They need to keep cool. So they use their big ears and the take baths of water or dust and periods of rest are critical to maintaining body temperature.
Baby elephants are raised and nurtured by the whole family group, from the moment they are born. Elephants usually have only one (approximately 265 pound) offspring at a time. At 22 months, elephant gestation is the longest of any mammal. As long as they can stay clear of poachers, elephants can live to 60 or 70 years of age
An elephant's ivory tusks are the animal's second most distinctive feature-and also one of the main reasons humans pose a threat to elephants. The elephants use it for digging, fighting and even as a resting place for the heavy trunk, these tusks have been prized by hunters for centuries for use in decorative arts, game pieces, signature seals, and musical instruments.
The panda
The loveable and charismatic panda is one of the most popular animals in the world thanks to its adorable and cuddly appearance. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most endangered. But fewer than 1,000 pandas remain in the wild.
Pandas are robust, bear-like animals with a distinctive black and white coat. They have a head and body length of 120 to 150 cm, and weigh between 85 and 110 kg.
They live in China.
Pandas eat a lot of bamboo. But takes bamboo about a year to regenerate from seed, and up to 10 years before it can support a panda population. This cycle can create problems for pandas, since they are dependent on bamboo for food and their range keeps diminishing.
Also areas of panda habitat are being cut down for timber, agriculture, and other uses, ever shrinking their natural range, and making available bamboo inaccessible.
Some poaching of pandas still occurs, and even low levels of poaching can have grave consequences for such an endangered species. In recent years, several panda pelts being sold for large sums.
Pandas are also unintentionally injured or killed in traps and snares set for other animals, such as musk deer and black bears.
The gorilla
Gorillas are the largest of the great apes. A male can weigh from 450-500 pounds and, when standing upright, can measure up to six feet tall. Females are smaller, weighing about 200 pounds. The can get proximately 30 years. They live in west and mid-Africa in small groups of 10 to 30 gorillas. Female gorillas will get like 4 or 5 babies in her life.
However, despite their great size, the four subspecies of gorillas are in critical danger. The gorilla eats things like leaves, fruit, vegetables and other plants. So there is enough food for him to eat. But things like people are cutting woods down for the agriculture, civil war in the areas where they live, poaching for the bushmeat trade, shooting at these animals as a sport and the spread of dangerous diseases like Ebola, are causes of gorillas being in serious danger.
These three animals are very loved but in danger. There are organisations to help these animals and all the other endangered animals. In a lot of countries law protects these animals
