Opgave 1:

Opgave 2: De nationale kleding van de Schotten: een geplooide rok van geruite wollen stof, de kilt. Er zijn veel verschillende kleuren ruiten. Ieder mannelijk lid van een bepaalde clan draagt dezelfde ruit, de clan- kleuren. Erboven een overhemd met een soort van een flodderdas, een jabot. Een zwart uniformjasje met zilveren knopen, over één schouder een doek in de clan kleuren, op de buik bovenop de kilt een buidel van bont, de ‘sporran’. Kniekousen met kwasten, in één van de kousen een mes, schoenen met gespen.

Opgave 3: Het speciale instrument van de Schotten is de doedelzak. Ik vind het niet mooi, het is kattengejammer.

Opgave 4: Ik ken het woord ‘colleen’ = meisje
het woord ‘ Loch’ = meer

Opgave 5: Koningin Elisabeth II is aan de macht sinds 1952 en ze zal waarschijnlijk opgevolgd worden door de Prince of Wales, Prins Charles. Maar misschien ook door Prins William, de zoon van Charles en Diana.

Opgave 6: Een ‘clan’ is een grote groep mensen met een gezamenlijke voorvader. Van ‘familie’ kun je misschien niet meer spreken, het is eerder een soort stam met een gemeenschappelijke voorouder.

Opgave 7: Men zegt dat in Loch Ness, een groot meer bij Inverness, een groot, voorwereldlijk waterdier leeft. Sommige mensen beweren dat ze een lange slangenhals met een vrij kleine kop boven water zagen komen, en een bolle, vlezige bovenkant van een rug. Ik heb geen idee of er echt zo’n dier in Loch Ness leeft of dat het alleen maar een wild verhaal is. Er bestaan maar een paar heel onscherpe, onduidelijke foto’s van het dier. Ik weet echt niet of ik dat wel moet geloven.

A PUZZLE FOR LOGAN
Over het boek wil ik de nummers van de opdrachten 4, 5, 6 en 8 behandelen.

4 -Mijn favoriete deel van het verhaal was het laatste hoofdstuk, hoofdstuk 11, ‘De laatste stukken van de puzzel’. Ik was blij dat eindelijk duidelijk geworden was dat Ronnie Campbell niet schuldig was aan de moord op Craig Sinclair maar ik vond het wel heel erg dat hij zeven jaar onschuldig in de gevangenis gezeten had voor iets wat hij niet gedaan had.

5 -Het eerste deel van hoofdstuk 5, ‘Vragen voor Robert Baxter’ vond ik een beetje vervelend om te lezen. Ik houd niet zo van lange beschrijvingen en gedachten want dat is saai om te lezen. Ik vind dat dialogen veel meer aanspreken en dan is er tenminste actie. Wat ik ook vervelend vind is dat er steeds straten en plekken genoemd worden waar het verhaal zich afspeelt. Ik ken Edinburgh nog niet en zijn al die stratennamen overbodig.

6 -Aan de schrijver van het boek, Richard Macandrew, zou ik willen vragen of dit verhaal puur fantasie is of dat hij het gebaseerd heeft op een waar gebeurd verhaal. Er zitten tenslotte meer mensen in de gevangenis die met de misdaad waarvoor ze veroordeeld zijn niets te maken hebben.
Ik zou hem ook willen vragen of het boek oorspronkelijk langer was en alleen voor het lezen op school ingekort was. Want het vliegt zo kort samengevat door het avontuur heen.

8 -Ik heb van ‘A puzzle for Logan’ geleerd dat de politie soms veel te makkelijk voor een schijnbaar logische oplossing van een probleem kiest en veel te snel aanneemt dat iemand schuldig is. Maar dat wist ik eigenlijk al, want André de Vries werd ook eerst veroordeeld voor de vuurwerkramp in Enschede en toen toch weer vrijgesproken. En in Putten was ook zoiets aan de hand met twee mannen die voor moord veroordeeld werden en die jaren voor niets in de gevangenis gezeten hebben. En pas toen ze hun hele straf uitgezeten hadden werden ze vrijgesproken.

2 - I know the following names with ‘Mac’: MacLaren (racecars), MacDonald (hamburgers)

3 - The police are used to nicknames but ‘pigs’ is an insult and they hate that. Nobody likes to be insulted. As far as I know the word ‘bobbies’ comes from ‘Robert’ and this was used for a soldier of the light infantry, long ago. This is what I found in the dictionary but I am not sure that I got it right.

4 – Visiting Edinburgh, one should go and see Edinburgh Castle, 300 feet above the city on a volcanic rock, the 7th Century signature castle houses and the Scottish regalia (crown, jewels, scepter and sword).

Leading from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile goes downhill through the oldest part of Edinburgh. On both sides beautiful old townhouses, museums and cathedrals.

Walk past the Parliament House, built in 1632. It is now the site of Scotlands Supreme Court. One finds it in High Street.

A visit to the National Gallery of Scotland. There is a permanent collection of a variety of European Masters from the 14th Century to Monet and other Frenchimpressionists. Address: The Mound.

Another sight is Holyrood Castle, Queen Elisabeth II’s Scottish residence, at Canongate.

And if one travels with children, there is always beautiful Edinburgh Zoo, so everybody can have a good time.

5 – Article in the Edinburgh Herald:
Today a known criminal, Ronnie C., serving time in prison for a murder he committed seven years ago, escaped from a prison van near Dundee. They were going to move him down to Saughton. Ronnie got away at a petrol station in a dark blue Audi that he had stolen. The police lost track of him.
The public is advised to be very careful! Should somebody see him, don’t interfere!
Just inform the police as soon as you can. The police don’t know if Ronnie is armed.
It is certainly a possibility.
The fugitive was convicted for the murder of Craig Sinclair, a small-time criminal. Ronnie used a gun then, he might use a gun now!
In tomorrow’s Edinburgh Herald we’ll dig up all the details of the murder case of 1996.

May 1996

This is hell. I have been here now for two days and I am still dazed. I can’t
understand why this is happening to me. I know that I did some things in my
life I shouldn’t have done. But this! I didn’t kill that man. I didn’t! But I was convicted
anyway for something somebody else did. Why did that Morag Mackenzie come
forward and say that she had seen me in the Abbotsford Arms? I wasn’t there! I wasn’t
there. Why did she have to go and lie about me? Did somebody pay her to tell lies?
Who? Questions and more questions going through my head but no answers. Who
wanted to put the blame on me? Who killed Craig? This is driving me mad. I can’t
think in this hellhole… If only I knew who could help me to get out of here…

After I read about your work, I have some questions you may be able to answer. How do you combine all the loose facts and solve a case? Is that something they teach you at the Police Academy ? You must be shocked when the police make terrible mistakes, like they did in the case of Ronnie Campbell! I just wonder how you feel when you are called to a bloody situation like the killing of Morag Mackenzie.

Maybe it is too personal, but why does a lovely girl like you choose a job with the police? It must be very tiring to have such long working-days! I am hoping that one day you and Tam MacDonald will really get together? Do you think that you can keep up this work once you are married?

I thought it a clever job, but I would have liked it better if Grant would have received more appreciation. You and Grant together have worked so well! My compliments.

Jenny Logan is an Inspector of the Edinburgh police. She takes her work very seriously. She is an intelligent woman and she is good at her job. She thinks it is an inportant job. She hates it when people do not always take her seriously and she works very hard to show those people that they are wrong.
She is around thirty. She has short brown hair and dark brown eyes. She is not pleased with her nose because she thinks it is a bit too long. She likes to be dressed in a smart, correct way. She likes to look a professional. Colleagues think she is to pretty for her job and so does her journalist friend Tam MacDonald. She has a sense of humor and her assistant, Sergeant Grant likes that very much. She lives in a flat in Leith in the North of Edinburgh. She likes Scottisch music: it makes her think better. All in all she is a nice person.
