Introduction

This paper is about James Bond. We’ve decided to choose this subject because everybody knows James Bond from the movies, but not many people know a lot about what’s behind it. We are going to talk about the movies, but also about the finder of James Bond, Ian Fleming. Almost everybody likes – or at least knows – James Bond. Therefore there is much information about the movies, but about the books and the writer there is a lot less. We have split our paper into four chapters. The first chapter is about the writer, Ian Fleming, there is not many known about him by the many, but we hope we can make something clear. The second chapter is about the books. We’ll tell something about the difference between the books and the movies, about how many books there are and who writes the newest Bond stories. The third chapter is about the movies. In this chapter we will tell you, who plays in it. The fourth chapter will be about the actors. Something will be told about their lives, and about why they’ve become James Bond. In the fifth chapter there will be some information about the gadgets James Bond is using. About his cars, his guns, his special Q-gadgets, about everything. Finally there will be a conclusion about everything we learned or didn’t learn by writing this paper. I hope this give a good idea about where this paper is about.

Chapter 1

This chapter is about Ian Fleming. He is the finder of James Bond, and the writer of the original novels. Ian Fleming was born in 1908, in London. His father was Valentine Fleming, the son of a Scottish banker, and his mother was Evelyn St. Croix Rose Fleming. He also had a bigger brother, named Peter Fleming. His family was a part of the British upper class, and his father was a member of the parliament. Fleming’s father died when Ian was only nine years old. He was under high pressure of his family to take over his father’s fortune. He didn’t really want it because if he would built up his own empire, than he could be proud to himself because he was the only one who was responsible for his success. He went to Eton school and won there twice the athletics price. Before he got his graduation he quit Eton school, because of an incident with a girl. He didn’t feel sorry about leaving the school, because at the school he always was Peter’s little brother and Valentine’s youngest son. After Eton he went to the military academy of Sandhurst. He wasn’t a great student there, and he left the school without a commission for officer. Later he said that he didn’t want to get into the army, because you can’t be an individual in the army. He still didn’t have a graduation, so he went to Europe to go to school. He went to school in the Austrian village Kitzbuhel. There he was put under the tutelage of Forbes and Phyllis Dennis. In that Austrian place, were nobody knows the famous war-hero Valentine Fleming, and where he wasn’t the little brother of smart Peter Fleming, that was the place where he could finally develop his own identity. After he had finished school, he didn’t had any idea about what he wanted to do. So he decided to follow his brother and become a journalist. He joined Reuters in London, but when he find out that he wouldn’t get rich from being a journalist, he was gone. In the footsteps of his grandfather, he joint in a London bank, in the hope that this could make him rich. He didn’t find banking interesting enough, so he took an assignment for The Times in the Soviet-Union. At his Reuters time he had made some friends at the Foreign Intelligence Service. When he was officially in Russia as a correspondent, he actually was a spy for the west.
In May 1939 he joined the British Naval Intelligence. He started as a Lieutenant, and than be became Commander (the same naval rank as James Bond has). In World War II Fleming became the right hand of one Britton’s top spy’s, admiral John Godfrey (some sort of ‘M’). As his right hand he wrote thousands of memo’s and reports. He also advised the Americans on how to set up a secret service, the OSS, the predecessor of the CIA. As secret agent in the Second World War the had many missions. He’d help prisoners escape from the Nazi-camps in Dieppe (France), and later he took the command of the 30th Assault group. It was a very successful group, and Fleming saw it as a personal victory. At the end of the war Fleming had to travel to Jamaica for a naval conference. As soon as he was in the country he loved it. There was no war, no stress, everything was beautiful and peaceful. He decided he this should be his paradise. When the war was over, he started to make plans, he designed his house, and for six years he travelled every winter to Jamaica to take care of the fact that everything would become all right. When his house was ready, he moved in and called his house “GoldenEye” (the Bond movie “GoldenEye” was called so as a tribute to Ian Fleming). When one of his many girlfriends got pregnant, he decided that 44 was a good age to get married and become a father. His girlfriend was already married, but she was divorced, they could finally marry. With his wife, Lady Anne Rothermere, he lived happy on Jamaica. He had all the time to write on his books, and in the year of the wedding his first novel came out. He wrote 14 James Bond novels. Just like the main character in all his books, he drinks and smokes a lot. On a trip to the meeting of his golf committee, he get a heart attack and he dies, at 1 am on the 12th of August, 1984. Leaving the world a wife, a son, and the most famous action hero ever. James Bond.

Chapter 2

When Ian Fleming bought his house in Jamaica, he finally had the time to go on with his old hobby, writing stories. On Jamaica he has written 14 Bond stories. At the beginning his novels were not very popular. But when the people heard that it were John F. Kennedy’s (very popular president of the US) favourite books, they became very popular in a short time. A lot of people began to read them, and Ian Fleming became very rich. The first one, Casino Royale, is some sort of introduction about the person of Bond. He has to win a Baccarat game, from a terrorist so he can’t pay back the money he’s borrowed, and he’ll be eliminated. Bond wins the baccarat game, but he will be taken as a hostage, and they’ll torture him. When he is in recovery you’ll read his thoughts about why he joins the Secret Service. This book is never filmed, because it’s more like a psychological visualisation of Bond, and there’s not much action in it. It also introduces the persons of M, Felix Leiter and Miss Moneypenny. The other 13 Bond novels are all filmed. When all the stories were filmed, people still liked the Bond idea. By now, the movies are not filmed books, but the book is a book form of the scenario. So other writer’s took over the job and now there are more books than movies. The first non-Fleming story that has been filmed was “The Living Daylights”. About this movie is never written a book. After that Raymond Benson and John Gardner begun to write as official writers in serving of the official James Bond Movie Company. “Licence to Kill” and “GoldenEye” are written by John Gardner, and “Tomorrow Never Dies”, “The World Is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day” are written by Raymond Benson.

Chapter 4

In this chapter, we’re going to tell about the actors of the James Bond movies.
The leading part in the James Bond movies, is of course James Bond himself. There are five persons, who ever played James Bond. In this chapter we’ll give the biographies of these five persons.

1. Sean Connery.

Sean Connery was born on 25 August 1930. He was born in the Fountain bridge district of Edinburgh, Scotland. After leaving school, he joined the Royal Navy. He had many jobs, including laborer, lifeguard and model for art classes. He made his television debut in 1956. He signed a movie contract with MGM in the 1950’s, and so he became a popular actor, in lots of movies.

He played James Bond in the first James Bond movie: Dr. No in 1962.

Connery quit the role after You Only Live Twice, in order to spend more time to his family and to golf. In the next Bond movie, George Lazenby played James Bond, but Connery returned Bond in Diamonds are Forever. With that role, he said he was finished as Bond, but he returned in 1983 in the Bond movie Never Say Never Again, which was not an "official" Bond film, as it was produced by Kevin McClory instead of Eon.

Connery won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as the Golden Globe award in 1987, for his role as the Irish cop Malone in The Untouchables. He was also named "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1989.

2. George Lazenby.

George Lazenby was born on 5 September 1939 in Goulburn, Australia.

The search for a new actor to playing James Bond had begun in 1968, after Sean Connery had said he was finished with the role. Lazenby won the role of Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Lazenby had no experience in the TV world, except some TV commercials, where he was very popular for doing commercials for Big Fry Chocolates.

On the set of the film, there was much conflict with Lazenby and the producers. That’s why Lazenby decied not be doing any more Bond movies. Connery was back to playing in the other movies. Nevertheless many fans said that On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is one of the best in the series.

3. Roger Moore.

Roger George Moore was born on 14 October 1927 in Stockwell, south London. When he was 15, he entered art school and want to become a painter. In the 1949’s, his hobby was acting. He studied at the Royal Academy of Drama and played in some plays in the West End, before being inducted into the British Army. He worked in theatre, by radio and television, and was also a model.

Moore came to the U.S. in 1953, where he got a film contract with MGM. His first big TV series was Ivanhoe, followed by Maverick. But the Bond role returned to Moore in 1972, when Sean Connery again said that he was finished as Bond, and so Moore was “The man” in Live and Let Die.

Moore made 7 Bond films.
He has been married 4 times, and he has 3 children, Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian.

4. Timothy Dalton.

Timothy Dalton was born on 21 March 1944 in Colwyn Bay, Wales. He grew up in Manchester, England, with a background in show-bizz. After leaving school, he joined the National Youth Theatre and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for 2 years. He joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1966, where he played many leading roles.

He won the role of 007 in August 1986 when Pierce Brosnan canceled. Dalton played Bond twice, in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill .

Dalton has one son, Alexander, and his wife is Ukranian actress/model Oksana Grigorieva. Dalton is very private, so not much details are known about his personal life.

5. Pierce Brosnan.

Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born on 16 May 1953 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland. He moved with his family to London in 1964. One of the first films he saw was Goldfinger. He became a commercial artist after leaving school, but was introduced to acting in a theatre group. He left his job for the life of an actor, and entered the Drama Centre in London, where he studied acting for 3 years.

His "big break" came in 1981 in the TV mini-series The Manions of America.

Rumors began in 1984 that Pierce would replace Roger Moore as the next James Bond. On 8 June 1994 was the announcement that Pierce Brosnan would be the 5th OO7.
His 1st Bond film GoldenEye was a big success.
His 2nd Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) grossed more money in the US than GoldenEye. His 3rd Bond film The World is Not Enough (1999) had the largest opening weekend in James Bond and MGM studio history!
His last Bond movie Die another day is also very successful.

Brosnan’s first wife, actress Cassandra Harris, was a "Bond girl", playing Countess Lisl in For Your Eyes Only. He has 3 children with Cassandra: Sean, Dylan and Thomas.

Chapter 5

There are many gadgets. I give a list of the most used guns. And a few cars

The Guns

Beretta
Only seen for a short period in Dr, No, the .25 calibre Beretta was taken from Bond by the armourer because although Bond liked the gun, it had failed him on a mission. And so the armourer suggested the perfect replacement weapon for a secret agent...the Walther PPK.

Walther PPK
Bond's classic gun, the German-made Walther PPK is introduced in Dr. No. It replaced the .25 calibre Beretta that was suseptable to not working in tight situations. The PPK is 7.65mm calibre with a 6 round magazine. It's most desirable feature is it's size, as it is perfect for concealment. This makes it one of the favourite pistols in secret services around the world.

44 Magnum
Making a solitary appearance in Live and Let Die, 007 takes the .44 Magnum along with him when saving Solitaire. A 6-shot revolver, the magnum packs considerably more punch than Bond's smaller, easier-concealed handguns. The force behind it easily compensates for its size.

The cars

Aston Martin DB5
As one of most famous cars in the world, the Aston Martin DB5 given its claim to fame in Goldfinger and subsequently Thunderball. The DB5 is the classic Bond car. It features .30 calibre Browning machine guns, a rear oil slick, tyre-shredders, a revolving licence plate, bulletproof windows and a passenger ejector seat. It can travel well over speeds in excess of 200 mph. On the whole it is as luxurious as it is fully loaded.

Lotus Turbo Esprit
This British-made Lotus is seen in both The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only. It can reach speeds of 165 miles per hour and is equipped with a self-destruct mechanism. It has a twin turbo-charged 4 cylinder motor capable of generating 360 hp. It's most prized addition, however is the ability to convert it into a small submarine. If you use the submarine convesion function it travels at around 22 knots. Other benefits of this are a full screen radar, a periscope, an underwater rear smoke releaser, a vertically launched surface-to-air missle and a harpoon gun. Certainly a very unique vehicle.

BMW Z8
The Z8 is introduced in The World Is Not Enough. This 2-seater convertible features class three armour, a missile launcher and the ability to be driven using Bond's key chain.

The conclusion.

When we heard that we have to make a paper, we all three thought James Bond was a nice subject.
At first we agreed about who should do what, which worked out very well. Everybody had the same portion work to do.
When we’re starting to work, we could find more than enough information about our project. We have looked on the Internet, in search engines and on the Bond sites, like:

We found lots of information on the Internet. We’ve used this information in our project.
We’re happy that we could found very much information about James Bond. It’s of course a popular subject, with lots of information.

The teamwork was excellent. We all did our work, then we delivered the work to Dirk, and he put it all together in one piece.

That’s how we made our paper, and it was nice to make it!
