VERANTWOORDING KEUZE
Ik heb dit boek gekozen omdat ik Roald Dahl een fantastisch schrijver vind. Ik las vroeger in groep 3 al boeken van Roald Dahl die vertaalt waren naar het Nederlands. Vooral “matilde” en “ De griezels” vond ik heel mooi en toen ik een boek in het Engels moest lezen ben ik direct naar een boek van Roald Dahl gaan zoeken. Kiss Kiss is een verzameling van verhalen die ook op een boekenlijst van mevrouw van Gelderen stond en die ben ik toen gaan lezen. Ik heb uiteindelijk wel het hele boekje gelezen, ook al hoefde ik maar 5 verhalen te lezen voor dit verslag.

VERWACHTINGEN VOORAF
Voor dat ik in het boek begon te lezen, verwachtte ik een heel humoristisch boek, omdat dat over het algemeen de schrijfstijl is van Roald Dahl. Ook had ik al eens een verhaal dat in dit boek staat gelezen die ik ook heel grappig vond.
Na het lezen waren al mijn verwachtingen uitgekomen en bleek het inderdaad heel humoristisch te zijn.

SAMENVATTING VAN DE INHOUD
Een fragment in het boek die ik speciaal onthouden heb omdat hij mij aanspreekt is in het verhaal “ parson’s pleasure” aan het einde, als een antiek in- en verkoper denk dat ie een hele waardevolle ladenkast heeft gekocht. De vorige eigenaren hakken het ding in stukken omdat de antiekhandelaar heeft gezegd dat hij de kast alleen gaat gebruiken als brandhout en alleen de poten intakt wil houden, om zo de prijs laag te houden. ( blz. 84-85)

Samenvatting: The landlady
Billy Weaver is sent to Bath on business. While he is looking for a hotel he sees a Bed and Breakfast notice on the window. Looking through the window he sees a dachshund and a parrot in a cage. Although he feels he would really prefer to stay at a pub, something inside him makes him ring the bell. The door is opened by a friendly elderly lady who offers him a room at a very low price. The woman is happy with her new guest because he’s a very good-looking young man. Billy wants to go to bed early but he first has to sign the guest-book. In it two names are written: Christopher Mulholland and Gregory W Temple. According tot the dates, they wrote down their names years ago. Billy has heard the names before but he cannot remember why. He has a cup of tea in his landlady’s living-room. They talk about the two men from the guest-book. Billy is sure their names were in the newspapers. To his surprise The landlady tells him that the two men never left, they are up on the third floor. Billy finds out that the parrot and the dog are stuffed. The landlady says she stuffed all her pets when they die. Billy finishes his tea, which taste very strange, like almonds, while The landlady watches him. ( note that some kinds of poison smell of almonds)

The way op to heaven
The Forsters live in a six-storey house in New York. Mrs Forster’s greatest fear is to arrive somewhere late and to miss a bus or plane. Mr Forster is irritated by this and he has the unpleasant habit of keeping his wife waiting on purpose. One day Mrs Forster is about to fly over to Paris, to spend six weeks whit their daughter. Their servants will be on holiday and Mr. Forster will stay at his club. When Mrs Forster arrives at the airport her plane cannot take off because of the fog. Finally the flight is cancelled till the next morning. Her husband tells her on the phone to come home to spend the night, and so she does. The next morning the Forsters are about to drive away in a cab when Mr Forster says he has lost a parcel. He goes back into the house. After some time Mrs Forster finds the parcel in the car, very worried that she will miss the plane, goes to the house to fetch her husband. But at the door she pauses, as if listening to some noise coming from within the house. Then she tells the cabdriver not to wait for her husband. Mrs Forster spends six wonderful weeks with her daughter. Each week she sends her husband a letter. When she returns there is nobody in the house and her letters are on the door-mat unopened. Then she telephones a company to send a repair man, because the elevator seems to have got stuck between the second and the third floors.

Parson’s Pleasure
Mr Cyril Boggis is a dealer in antique furniture. Every Sunday he drives trough the countryside, looking for old farmhouses. He wears the black suit and white collar of a parson. He tells people who own antique furniture that he is the president of the Society for the Preservation of Rare furniture. Then most people trust him and show him round their houses. In this way Mr Boggis often succeeds in buying valuable antiques at a low price, which he can sell at a great profit in his London shop. One Sunday Mr Boggis is hunting for antiques in Buckinghamshire. In the first house he visits there is no furniture of interest. Through a window of another farmhouse he sees a Hepplewhite chair, but there is nobody home. At an old farmhouse Boggis meets three men: Rummins, his son Bert and Claud, their friend. Inside the house Mr Boggis makes the find of his live. It’s a Chippendale Commode, a very rare chest-of-drawers worth thousands of pounds. It takes him a long time to convince the men that the chest is not an original but a reproduction. He says that it is not worth much but that he could use its legs. The rest is good for firewood. He tells the men about the methods that are used to make furniture look very old. At last Rummies sells him the chest for 20 pounds. While Mr Boggis is fetching his car the three men decide among themselves that he chest is not going to fit into the parson’s car. Afraid that he may not buy it after all, they saw off the four legs and hack the rest of the chest-of- drawers to pieces with an axe, so that Mr. Boggis will be able to get it in his car.

PERSOONLIJKE BEOORDELING
Ik vond alle onderwerpen van de verhalen heel interessant, maar de onderwerpen waren niet zo herkenbaar in mij eigen belevingswereld omdat de gebeurtenissen vaak niet voorkomen in het dagelijkse leven, maar ik kon wel heel goed met de hoofdpersonen meeleven. De verhalen hebben me niet echt aan het denken gezet, alleen over wat ik anders zo hebben gedaan in hun plaats. Er wordt niet heel erg op de onderwerpen ingegaan, het is meer oppervlakkig. Ik zou niets aan deze verhalen veranderen.
In alle verhalen spelen de gebeurtenissen een even grote rol als de gedachten en gevoelens van de hoofdpersoon. Elk verhaal ging over éen of twee gebeurtenissen, die meestal heel ongewoon en grappig waren om te lezen. De gebeurtenissen op zich waren niet erg geloofwaardig en komen gewoon haast nooit voor, maar zoals de schrijver het schreef leek het heel gewoon en vooral geloofwaardig. Er vonden geen gebeurtenissen plaats die schokkend waren of die bij mij bepaalde gevoelens opriep. Alle aflopen van de verhalen waren gesloten of min of meer al heel subtiel ingevuld, zodat je wist wat er ging gebeuren.
De personen kwamen altijd levensecht over en ik kon me goed inleven in de hoofdpersonen. Ik herkende niet echt eigenschappen van mijzelf in bepaalde personen. Ik herkende wel iemand uit mijn eigen omgeving, namelijk “the colonel” lijkt op een oud leraar van mij. Het gedrag van de hoofdpersonen heeft mij niet bijïnvloed. Een eigenschap van Mr Boggis vond ik heel negatief, namelijk dat ie zo hebberig was en mensen verschrikkelijk voorloog.
De verhalen waren niet zo heel moeilijk om te lezen en er waren geen verwarrende flashbacks of flashforwards. Er zaten geen delen in die mij niet boeide. De afloop van altijd verrassend, maar toch wel bevredigend.
Het taalgebruik was niet heel moeilijk en alles was helder en duidelijk geschreven. Er kwamen niet heel veel dialogen in voor., maar de dialogen waren wel natuurlijke wijze weergegeven. Er zijn geen speciale fragmenten die ik zou willen onthouden.
