Title: So much to tell you
Author: John Marsden. He was born in Melbourne (Australia), the third of four children, in 1950. When he was 28 years old he was an English teacher, but now he’s a fulltime writer. So much to tell you is his first book. With this book he won Australia’s 1988 book of the year award.
Kind of book: This book is written like a diary.
Place: The place of the story is at a boarding-school in Warrington (England).
Time: The story takes place in this time. Because there are already cars and also television.
Own Opinion: It was a nice book to read. I liked the story because in the first part of the book you don’t know what the name is of the girl and why she doesn’t talk. So you want to know al these things. It wasn’t a difficult book to read. I like the end of the book, because when she sees her father she starts to talk again.
Main Character(s): The most important person in this book is Marina. She a shy girl, she doesn’t talk. Her father had a fight with her mother. Her father wanted to shoot her mother, but he hit Marina. Her face is mutilated since then, that’s why she doesn’t talk anymore. Sometimes she wanted to talk, but she just couldn’t talk.
Important events: When Marina was young her father and mother had a fight. Her father wanted to shoot her mother because he was very angry to her. He doesn’t hit Marina her mother, but Marina self. So her face is mutilated. She went to the hospital for a long time, but she wouldn’t talk anymore, and they couldn’t help her to talk again. Her mother placed her on a boarding-school for girls in Warrington, because she couldn’t resist the silence. While Marina spends her time at the boarding-school, her mother went to New York.
At school she talked 2 times a week with a psychologist. But she didn’t help Marina to start talking again. The woman only talked about her own problems, and she doesn’t talk to Marina.
Her English teacher gave her, and all the other girls from her class, a journal to write in. So she wrote everything in it what she did and think. Like a diary. The teacher didn’t read the book, he only looked if they write something in it. Marina hasn’t got any friends. So she went to the chapel. She liked it there. There was only one girl that she liked a bit, Cathy. She’s a kind girl. But she didn’t talk to anyone, so she didn’t talk to Cathy.
In the holiday she stayed at Cathy’s house. She still didn’t talk to her, but she likes it there. One day she wrote a letter to Cathy, when they sat in the chapel. She asked Cathy if she could go to her father who was in the hospital in Buntleigh that time, not far away from Cathy’s house. So that Monday she went to her father with the train. When she was in the hospital she saw her father, and the first thing she said was:” I’ve got so much to tell you”.
