The long delays of the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce by the Court of Chancery made people poor and very unhappy. Whole families had been born and died during the history of Jarndyce and Jarndyce.

Lord Chancellor makes Ada Clare and Richard Carstone wards of court. They will stay at Bleak house with John Jarndyce, their cousin, and Esther Summerson, their companion.
Lady Dedlock lives at Chesney Wold. Mr Tulkinghorn (their lawyer) was at Chesney Wold too. They talk about the case J&J. Mr Tulkinghorn shows the Dedlocks some papers about J&J. He know that my Lady has a secret.
Lady Dedlock is taken ill and go to bed.
Ada, Esther and Richard stay with Mrs Jellyby. They talk to Miss Flite. Miss Flite has her room in Mr Krook’s house. Mr Krook’s shop was full of rubbish.
He has a little rooms, and Nemo live in one of them. When they leave Richard left some money for Miss Flite on a shelf. Mr Tulkinghorn visits Mr Krook.
He saw Nemo laying on the floor, dead. They call doctor Allan Woodcourt, and he says that Nemo has taken too much opium and has died.
Ada, Esther and Richard arrived at Bleak house. They meet John Jarndyce, the owner of Bleak house. They talk about Mrs Jellyby. She works very hard for Africa, but her own children needed care too. John Jarndyce shows Bleak house. Esther makes friends with John. Esther had never known her parents and she had had very little love in her live. But now John had decided to look after her. In the evening John Jarndyce explains the Court of Chancery to Esther. Esther meets Mrs Pardiggle, the brick makers wife. Her baby dies and Esther covers the baby’s face with her handkerchief.
My Lady Dedlock was very bored at Chesney Wold. She decided to return to London. The oldest street was called Tom-All-Alone’s. The poorest of the people in the street was Jo, the crossing-sweeper. Nemo, Mr Krook’s lodger, had sometimes given him a little money. Jo helps a lady to show the way to Mr Krook’s shop, the place where Nemo died. The lady gives him a piece of gold.
Ada and Richard fall in love. Doctor Allan Woodcourt visits Bleak house.
Richard decides to be a doctor too, but later changes his mind. Some months later, he had come to say goodbye to his friends at Bleak house. He was going to sail to India and China.
Ada, Esther and John Jarndyce visit the home of Mr Boythorn. Esther sees some of the people from Chesney Wold in church and later speaks to Lady Dedlock.
Jo talks about a lady to Mr Snagsby and the policeman. Inspector Bucket has a talk with Mr Tulkinghorn. Mr Bucket brings Jo to Mr Tulkinghorn’s rooms.
Richard becomes more interested in the case of J&J. John Jarndyce warns him to became a soldier, but John couldn’t change his mind.
Jo leaves London and reaches the brickmakers’ cottages. He is very ill.
Esther helps Jo and catches his illness. When Esther is better, Miss Flite visits her, and speaks about Esther’s handkerchief, and about Allan Woodcourt’s bravery at sea.
Lady Dedlock visits Esther, and tell her the truth: my Lady is the mother of Esther.
Mr Tulkinghorn visits the Dedlocks, and he tells them a story. The Frenchwoman, Hortense, visits Mr Tulkinghorn.
Esther tells John Jarndyce her mother’s secret. John Jarndyce asks Esther to marry him. Esther visits Richard in London and sees Allan Woodcourt again.
Jo is dead.
Esther and Ada visits Richard. Ada and Richard tell Esther their secret (they have been married). Esther returns alone to Bleak house.
Mr Tulkinghorn warns Lady Dedlock that her disgrace is near. The lawyer is found murdered. Mr Bucket makes an arrest.
Lady Dedlock get a letter with: ”LADY DEDLOCK – MURDERESS”. My Lady writes a letter to her husband that she’s innocent. She leave the house, and Mr Bucket and Esther follow her. Lady Dedlock is found.
Sir Leicester returns to Chesney Wold. Esther and John Jarndyce go to London to be near Ada and Richard.
An important will is found. The will gives Richard new hope. John Jarndyce says Esther he will be her father, and Allan Woodcourt will be her husband.
They live together in Bleak house.
Esther and Allan went together to the Court of Chancery. It’s the and of the case Jarndyce and Jarndyce. Esther and Allan tells Richard about their marriage, and about the and of the case J&J. Richard is dead.
Seven years had passed since the death of Richard. Ada had a boy: Richard, and Allan and Esther are the proud parents of two daughters.
