Facts
a) Jane Austen
b) Sense and Sensibility, Penguin Popular Classics, England, First published in 1811, 1994, 374.
c) It's definitely a love story
First reaction
a) I chose this book because I like the author and I have seen the movie for a couple of times. I knew the story. This was very handy because when I read the book almost everything was clear for me. I have read the book with a lot of pleasure.
b) Every time I read the book or I see the movie I almost begin to cry. In one scene Marianne is very ill and she almost dies. Elinor (her other sister) is almost desperate because she can't live without her and she cries for the first time in the movie. At that moment she shows for the first time what she really feels. I think that it's beautiful if you can write a book with so much feelings in it. I felt the same as Elinor at that moment. You can hate a person in a book but you can also love a person. We all love Marianne because she is very sweat and impulsive. So we can't live without her as well.
Summary
When Mr. Dashwood died, he left all his money to his first wife's son John Dashwood. His second wife and her daughters get just a little bit and they have to move out. Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters; Elinor, Marianne and Margaret are forced to search for another home. Soon they get a opportunity to move to Barton Park that is being owned by the Middletons (Mrs. Dashwood her causin and his mother) they can live in Barton Cottage. Elinor is sad they have to leave because she has fallen in love with Edward Ferrars. He is the brother-in-law of their half-brother John. They move and Marianne bumps into the handsome John Willoughby. He saved her when she twisted her ankle in the rain. Marianne falls hopelessly in love with him but he was disinherited of his love for her. He marries a rich woman and breaks her hart. At the same time Elinor and Marianne meet Colonel Brandon who falls in love with Marianne. She reminds him of a young girl that he loved in the past. Their love wasn't approved and they didn't see each other for a long time. When he found her she died in his arm's. Marianne hasn't got any interest in him because she is in love with John Willoughby. When Willoughby married Miss Grey Marianne was lovesick and miserable. She took a walk and it began to rain. She was very weak and fainted. Colonel Brandon finds her and brings her back to her sister Elinor. Marianne almost dies because she has got an enormous fever. When Elinor prepares herself for the worst Marianne wakes up and is better. She is still very weak but she isn't going to die anymore. She thanks Colonel Brandon and in the time that follows she begins to fall in love with him. While this is going on they have also met Lucy Steel. Lucy is secretly engaged with Edward Ferrars. Elinor is very disappointed because she can't tell anybody. She loves Edward but he can't marry her. When Edward's mother hears that he is secretly engaged to a girl she disinherits him. His younger brother Robbert Ferrars is very rich now. Lucy changes her mind and marries Robbert. The Dashwood's think that Edward is married to Lucy but he hasn't and asked if Elinor will marry him. She agrees and they marry the same day that Colonel Brandon and Marianne marry to each other.
b) The story takes place in England in the 19th centaury. In and around Barton Park, at the cottage of the Dashwoods and Sir John's. A part of the book takes place in London. The beginning of the story is in Norland Park, in Sussex. You can tell that by looking at the people and their clothes. Also the houses are very large. The cottage where de Dashwood's have to live is very large but they find it very small. If you read the book you find out that everybody uses carriages because the car wasn't invented yet.
Elinor Dashwood: she is the main character of the book. Elinor is nineteen years old. She was full of good sense. She always controls and hide her feelings and she is very calm. She has got two sisters , Marianne and Margaret.
Marianne Dashwood: she is Elinor's sister. Marianne loves reading and music. She is very different than her sister Elinor. She says what's on her mind and she is very open about her feelings. Also she is very impulsive
Edward Ferrars: he's very shy and keeps his promises. When he was younger he got engaged with Lucy Steel but he falls in love with Elinor. At the end he marries her after all.
John Willoughby: he is the one that is a heartbreaker. Marianne falls in love with him but because he has got inherited he had no money left. Marianne had practically no money so he broke her heart and married an other woman who had 50.000 pounds.
Colonel Brandon: he is a good friend of Sir John. Sir John is the cousin of Mrs. Dashwood. Colonel Brandon is always serious and calm. He's in love with Marianne but she is in love with Willoughby. When Willoughby breaks her hart she becomes very ill and Colonel Brandon found her and took her home. She thanks him when she is better and she slightly learns to love him. At the end they marry.
c) The story has got a lot of themes. Sense and Sensibility I first of all a love story. You see Marianne and Elinor fall in love and getting married. The story is about two young women who try to grow up as good as they can. They have to face al sorts of problems. They have no money and their father died when they were very young. The men that they love aren't available and they have to make the right choices. Also there's friendship. The friendship between the family but most of all between the two sisters.(Elinor and Marianne)
d)The story was first published in 1811 (in the 19th centaury). Jane Austen was born in 1775 and died in 1817. She is often regarded as the greatest of English women novelists on the strength of her six completed novels. She was the seventh child of a country parson. Her father was an intelligent and sensitive man who encouraged Jane in her love of reading. From an early age she was familiar with the works of Henry Fielding and Sir Walter Scott. Books she also wrote were: Emma (1816), Mansfield Park (1814), Persuasion (1818). Pride and prejudice (1813). The work show's that woman didn't had an easy time those days. They were forced to make choices and nobody helped them to make those choices. It also shows that if you had no money you didn't belong to the good people.
Opinion
There was a scene in the book that was very sad. Marianne is very sick and Elinor let's her feelings go for the first time in the movie. She finds out that she can't live without Marianne and she cries and talks to Marianne who fainted (because of her fever). This is the passage that stayed with me because it was very beautiful. There were no parts that were boring or something. I find it all very strong. The writer wrote it in such a way that when you read it you feel what those woman feel. When there is despair you feel it to when they feel sad and lovesick you feel it too and when their exited you are exited to. There is a movie from the book so that is significant. You can say that is looks like Pride and prejudice. The title looks the same and some things in the story the have in comment. The story plays in the 19th centaury so it isn't really modern. They weren't aloud to talk in a flirting way with men but nowadays it's very normal. Daughters can hared money from their fathers to these days. The language was sometimes difficult but with a dictionary I made it to the end. I think this is a book that says a lot about feelings. Every member of that family is different and it's nice to see how they react on each other. If you don't like books about that time you mustn't read it but if you like that you definitely have to read the book.
