A2: I’ve chosen this book because a friend recommended the book to me. She said it was a very nice book. And this book is very famous and that’s why I wanted to know how this book would be.
In the neighbourhood of the Bennett family's Longbourn, Mr. Bingley, an attractive young bachelor with a good income, has moved. He falls in love with the oldest of the five Bennett daughters, Jane. But his friend Mr. Darcy disapproves Bingley's choice. Darcy find it hard to resist his own increasing attraction to Jane's next younger sister, Elizabeth. She thinks Darcy is so proud and arrogant. Bingley and Darcy move to London. Jane is very upset about that. She is shocked when she hears that Darcy has treated a young man, George Wickham, cruelly and unjustly. Because Mr. Bennett has no son, his estate will be from his nearest male relative, Mr. Collins, when he dies. This man comes to Longbourn searching for a wife. He proposes to Elizabeth, who rejects him. But he wins her best friend, Charlotte Lucas. Elizabeth visits Charlotte, now Mrs. Collins. Darcy visits his aunt, Lady Catherine, who is Mr. Collins's patron. Darcy and Elizabeth meet constantly, and at last he proposes to her. She angrily rejects him, accusing him of destroying Jane's happiness and Wickham's prospects. Later, in an earnest letter, he tells her the truth. He did interfere between Jane and Bingley, but he did not treat Wickham bad. Elizabeth believes Darcy for once.
Elizabeth goes on a trip with her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners. They come to Darcy's great estate in his absence. Suddenly and unexpectedly, Darcy arrives. But then they hear that the youngest Bennett girl has run away with Wickham. Darcy feels responsible for that, he thinks he should have warned the Bennetts that Wickham once tried the same thing with Darcy's own sister. Besides, he is very much in love with Elizabeth. For her sake he makes sure that they are legally married, pays Wickham's debts, and buys him a commission in the army. He does this secretly. Elizabeth realises at last how wrong she's been about him. Bingley proposes to Jane and is accepted. Soon Darcy makes his proposes again to Elizabeth and so they are married and the story has a happy ending.
B1: Belangrijke passage 1:
Blz. 59/60: The evening altogether passed off pleasantly to the whole family. Mrs. Bennett had seen her eldest daughter much admired by the Netherfield party. Mr. Bingley had danced with her twice, and she has been distinguished by his sisters. Jane was as much gratified by this, as her mother could be, though in a quieter way
B2: Belangrijke passage 2:
Blz 123: ‘ Yes the late Mr. Darcy bequeathed me the next presentation of the best living gift. He was my godfather, and excessively attached to me. I cannot do justice to his kindness. He meant to provide for me amply, and thought he had done it; but when the living fell, it was given elsewhere.’
‘Good heavens!’ cried Elizabeth; ‘ but how could that be? – How could his will be disregarded?- Why did not you seek legal redness?’
B3 Belangrijke passage 3:
Blz. 236: She grew absolutely ashamed of herself.- Of neither Darcy nor Wickham could she think, without feeling that she had been blind, partial, prejudiced, absurd.
B4 karakterbeschrijving hoofdpersoon 1: Elizabeth Bennett
Blz. 59: Mr. Darcy walked off; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story however with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous.
Blz: 223: ‘But it is not merely this affair,’ she continued, ’on which my dislike is founded. Long before it had taken place, my opinion of you was decided. Your character was unfolded in the recital which I received many months ago from Mr. Wickham. On this subject, what can you have to say? In what imaginary act of friendship can you here defend yourself? Or under what misrepresentation can you here impose upon others?’
B5: Karakterbeschrijving hoofdpersoon 2: Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Blz,: 59:’ Come Darcy,’ said he, ‘I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.’
‘I certainly shall not. You know how I detest it, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. At such an assembly as this, it would be insupportable. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another women in the room, whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.’
Blz.: 374: ‘Mr. Darcy, I am a very selfish creature; and, for sake of giving relief to my own feelings, care not how much I may be wounding your’s. I can no longer help thanking you for your unexampled kindness to my poor sister. Ever since I have known it, I have been most anxious to acknowledge to you how gratefully I feel it. Were it known to the rest of my family, I should not have merely my own gratitude to express.
C: Evaluatie: I liked the book very much, although it was difficult to reed and
sometimes a few pages were a bit boring. When you’ve red the first twenty or thirty pages
you want to read the whole book in one time because I was very curious to know how the book would end.
Pride and Prejudice is said to be one of the most popular of all English novels. And I think that’s true because I loved this book, especially Darcy. It certainly is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever red.
I even have red the book in English and in Dutch and I’m looking for the movie now! And I think I’m going to read more books of Jane Austen in the future.
Belangrijk!
