THE LANDLADY By Roald dahl

1. Describe Billy Weaver, and say what his business was in Bath.
Billy is a 17 year old guy, who travelled down from London to Bath looking for a job. In the story he looks a place to stay for the night.

2. What makes him choose for this ‘Bed and Breakfast’ house, instead of the Bell and Dragon?
In some kind of way the house attracted him. Before he knew he walked to the door and rang the bell.

3. What was so strange when he rang the bell?
He rang the bell and before he could remove his finger, the door swung open and an old women stood there in front of him.

4. Describe the woman.
The woman had a round, pink face, lovely blue eyes and less white teeth than Billy.
She looked very nice and kind in the beginning, but at the end she looked weird and a bit scary.

5. Why does Billy think that the woman is ‘slightly dotty’, or ‘slightly off her rocker’?
Because she says that the other man are still on the third floor. But the two men should be gone by now…

6. What was so strange about the 2 names in the guestbook?
The first name was set 3 years ago, and the other one 2 years ago. And because Billy knew for sure he has heard these two names before. He thought in the newspaper.

7. Which of the three smells mentioned is the most particular for the story?
He caught a whiff of a weird smell that seemed to come directly from her person. It wasn't in the least unpleasant, and it reminded him of something. Pickled walnuts? New leather? Or was it the corridors of a hospital?

8. Explain how the two former guests can still be in the house.
Because they could have been murdered and stuffed by the woman.

9. What does Billy discover about the animals in the room?
The animals are stuffed by the woman.

10. Tell the story in brief.
Billy Weaver is seventeen years old and he’s going to Bath. He is looking for a place to stay for the night. He finds a room with breakfast by an old lady. She asks only 5 ½ shilling a day. Later on he has to write his name down in a special guestbook. There are already standing two names. Christopher Mulholland, 3 years ago, and the other person is from Gregory W. Temple, 2 years ago. Billy finds the names familiar from the newspaper, but he doesn’t know. Later he realises that the animals were stuffed, by the lady herself. She changes subject when Billy is talking about the two men. Billy thinks that the woman is slightly off her rocker because she tells him that the other men are still on the third floor and never left. It gives him a strange feeling that something is wrong, because they would be gone by now, right?
