Parson’s Pleasure - Roald Dahl
1. Why did Mr. Boggis disguise himself in the uniform of a clergyman?
Because he wanted to buy old furniture’s from people, but they won’t let him in when they know that he’s a dealer. Therefore he wears a uniform of a clergyman so they would let him in their houses.
2. What methods did Mr. Boggis use to get into people’s homes?
He told the peoples that he’s travelling through the countryside around London on a labour of love for the 'Society'.
3. How did Rummins, Claud and Bert behave when they first saw Mr Boggis? Why?
They behave not very nice, because they thought that Mr Boggis had been sent to poke his nose into their business and to report what he found to the govern¬ment. They thought that Mr Boggis knew about last night, when the two of them (Rummins and Bert) were sloughing a Pig without having a license for sloughing.
4. Mr Rummins doesn’t look very intelligent, but he’s not a fool at all. Give two examples in which is shown that he’s clever in his own way.
He doesn’t really trust Mr Boggis; he begins to suspect something when Boggis asked him if he could have a look inside the house. When Mr Boggis came in Rummins saw the way Mr Boggis was looking at his furniture (commode). He also doesn’t belief Boggis when he said that the furniture wasn’t very old.
5. What does Mr. Boggis discover in Rummins’ house?
He finds out that there is standing an old furniture in Mr Rummins house worth fifteen thousand pound. It was not any ordinary furniture, it was a Chippendale Commode standing in the living room. The Commodes were made by the famous 18th-century furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, and only three others were known to be in existence. And Mr Boggis found the fourth Chippendale Commode.
6. Why did Mr. Boggis say that he was only interested in the legs?
Because he already said that the Commode was faked. He wanted to pay less for the Commode; therefore he said that he was only interested in the legs. Also because Mr Rummins still wasn’t convinced by Mr Boggis.
7. “Mr Boggis got what he deserved!” Do you or don’t you agree with this expression? Explain your answer.
I agree, you can’t expect a reward by telling someone a lie. It was his own fault, because of his avarice he got what he did not expect.
8. The story ends quite suddenly. Write down, in short, a dialogue between Boggis and Rummins when he returns to discover that the legs have been sawn off and nothing is left but a pile of wood.
'My dear man' he whispered softly, `I only want the legs. Possibly I could find some use for the drawers later on, but the rest of it the carcass itself, as your friend so rightly said, it's fire¬wood, that's all.'
‘But, but …’stuttered Mr Boggis. He could not believe his eyes, all at once the excitement he had for the past minutes was gone. ‘Here you have your legs, we have been extra careful’ said Mr Rummins, while he proudly presented the left over legs. ‘What on earth have you done?’ asked Mr Boggis looking with disaprovement at the legs. The three men looked confused at Mr Boggis. Before he could curse them for what they have done, he stopped himself and began to think how he could save himself out of this situation. Then out of nothing he began to smile, ‘what a great idea! Even I could not think of a better way like this. I am very thankful to you. And what a surprise while I was on my way to my car, I found out that I was out of firewood! How can I thank you’ When finished, Mr Boggis secretly looked aside to see how the others reacted. Surprisingly they looked agreed with him. ‘It was nothing’ Mr Rummins said, ‘we just wanted to make you comfortable’. Suddenly Mr Boggis got a splendid idea; ‘Oh silly me, I have forgot to take the money with me. I have left it in the car, if you could all excuse me, I can get my wallet. And of course as a reward I will pay you more’. As he said that, he left the ring and walked towards his car. While the three men were all excited to receive the money, they did not notice that Mr Boggis was starting the car on the other side of the farm. Instead of searching for his wallet he started the car and left the three men quickly behind. But as shocked as the three men were, did not give up running after Mr Boggis. Eventually Mr Boggis got rid of them. Days passed and Mr Boggis was not sad anymore about his biggest failure. But suddenly there were the three men standing in his store all of them carrying a heavy axe. Before Mr Boggis could say something, the three men smashed everything Mr Boggis owned in pieces. All Mr Boggis could do was begging them to stop, which did not success. After a while they stopped smashing, and looked around themselves. They laughed and wished Mr Boggis a nice day, and then they left the store. Poor Mr Boggis, because of this he stopped dealing in furniture and began a whole new live as a farmer in Scotland. He did not want to go back nor been recognised anymore.
