The garden by Elizabeth Laird
The girl is walking home from her work. She doesn’t like her work. She always gets headaches and her feet are tired.
The street where she works is always hot and the people who are going home don’t look happy. On the way home she sees a flower shop. It is dark and quiet, but it smells nice and the leaves of the plants are still wet. She looks in her purse and she has some money left. She decides to buy some flowers.
When she comes home she puts the flowers in a vase and put them on the table. Her father comes in and asks her for his diner. She says that it isn’t ready yet.
Her father pours himself a whiskey, she sees that the bottle is almost empty. He is drunk, he asks her for money and she must go and get more whiskey.
She tells him she doesn’t have any money and she asks him to stop drinking so much, but he gets angry and starts shouting at her.
He throws the flowers and the vase to her, they fall down. He is angry because she spends her money on flowers. He walks out of the house to go to his friend’s house angrily. She starts to clean up the mess. Then she hears a knock on the door. It’s the neighbour, who heard the shouting. The old man asks her if she likes flowers. He suggests that she can grow flowers on his balcony that would be cheaper. The next day she goes home quickly because they have an appointment. She goes to her neighbour and she plants some flowers. She forgets about her problems and she feels happy.
Months passed, the balcony looks more beautiful all the time. Her father never comes to see it, he only cares about his drinking. He asks her for money and if she doesn’t give him any, he hits her. One day he is isn’t well. George, her neighbour, is also ill.
She cooks a meal for George and takes it to him. His eyes are closed, she touches him. He is dead. She walks back home where her father is waiting for his dinner. She tells him that George is dead. He says nothing. He picks up some money and leaves the house. When he comes home he is angry at her, he doesn’t like it that she feels sad for George. He tells her that he wants her to marry a young man, a friend of his. He says that she is not happy, that she will get older and that no one will marry her. She tells him that she doesn’t want to marry, she wants to stay with her balcony and her flowers. He says he hates her. She locks herself in the bathroom. Her father ruins the balcony with all the beautiful flowers. She comes out of the bathroom and she starts screaming at him, that she hates him. But he is asleep and drunk.
She decides to run away from home, she picks up some clothes and some flowers. She counts the money that she has left. It’s not much. She first walks to George’s home, but she doesn’t feel like she has enough time. She wants to leave the city, but it is quiet and dark outside. She waits for the morning to come. She gets into a bus, she wants a job in a garden somewhere. She falls asleep in the bus. Someone wakes her up, it’s the end of the line. She gets out. She sits at a table to have something to eat, she is worried because she needs a job. Someone comes up to her and asks if he can help her. She tells him she is looking for a job as a gardener. He says there is a garden behind a hill.
When she walks into the garden, called Jack’s garden, a woman asks her who she is. The girl explains her that she is looking for work. The woman sends her to a man, called Jack, the owner of the garden and he hires her for the job. Some day, her boss, Harry, tells her how beautiful she is. She doesn’t like that, she hates men. She says all men are the same.
Some time later, she goes back to the city. She sees a tramp, she is shocked, it is her father! He says he is sorry for all that he has done to her. She forgives her father. She takes her father with her to their home. The house is all dirty and it smells awful. There is only little furniture. Her father wants her to stay with him to take care of him. The next day she receives a letter from Jack. He apologizes for his behaviour. He wants to visit her the next day. When he comes, she sees that her father is changed. He talks to Jack nicely. The next day, when my father was asleep, Jack tried to say something, but he couldn’t. She said, whatever you are trying to ask, the answer is YES!
