Klasgenoten stonden vroeger als hongerige hyena's om Jorieke heen. Klaar om het jonge hertje aan te vallen dat nog scoubidoutouwtjes had.

Summary:
The joy luck club is going about four Chinese women that had in their childhood different
problems, they solved their problems in Chinese ways. The women are getting older and emigrate to America. There they all get a daughter. Every daughter get different problems. They want to solve the problems in American ways. Because they want to be independent from their mothers, because the daughter think their mothers are old fashioned. But in the years the daughters get more respect for their mothers.
Suyuan first had a club in China they played Mah Jong and gambled. Suyuan lost her husband in the war. When Suyuan had to leave China because of the war she had to left there her twin daughters on a road. After that she meat Channing Woo she emigrated to America. She started a new club with three other Chinese women of her age. The three other women have daughters of the same age. The relationships between mother and daughter are full of distress, anger and pleasure.
Just like June the daughter of Suyuan and Channing Woo discovers that she has twin sisters in China and her mother was looking for them in China when she finally knew where the were she died.
The other mothers tell that June have to go to China and find her twin sisters and tell them about their mother. June is going to China to find her lost sisters. She will find her sisters and discovers she is a real Chinese woman, something she denied for a long time because she felt like a American.
The mother of Lindo tells her that she looks a lot like her. She loved it to hear that, but if Lindo tells that her daughter Waverly looks just like her Waverly hates to hear that. Waverly always thought as a young girl her mother is strange. Waverly wants to play chess but her mother didn’t want her to play. After a time Waverly told she didn’t want to play chess anymore and then her mother supports her to play chess. Waverly was very good and could play chess competitions. If Waverly is playing a chess set her mother gives comment on her playing. She hates it and tells it to her mother to stop. The mother stopped giving comment but then Waverly didn’t liked chess anymore en stopped with playing chess.
Ying Ying marries at young age with a man that left her for another woman. She is very angry on her ex-husband and does a abortion. She is so angry she didn’t come out of her house. After a couple years she came out and heard her ex-husband is being killed by his ladylove. She is seeing the bright side of her life and remarries. She gets a daughter Lena. Who gets to problems with her husband. He is unreasonable, but she is to scared to divorce from him.
An-Mei grows up by her uncle and ant, until her mother is coming to get her. Her mother seems to be the fourth wife of a rich man. She is threathed bad by the other women of her husband. On one day she had to yield her son to the second wife of her husband because the second wife couldn’t get any children. The mother of An mei committed suicide because she is to depressed. Rose is getting to divorce, she is listening to everybody’s opinion but she can’t make her own opinion.
My favourite part of the book:
I liked the part that June finds her twin sisters. I have two sisters and I can’t live without them. Sometimes I hate them but we can’t live without each other. June discovers that she have sisters in China. She found them in China and realises who she really is. A reason she discovers who she really is because she found her sisters. Her mother died in the journey of searching to her two lost daughters. June never accept the Chinese culture of her mother before she went to China. After she met her sisters she realises that she is a real Chinese but her mother never knew. But this is a sample you can learn who you really are by knowing your family and listen to your family. If June accepted the Chinese culture of her mother maybe her life was better then she didn’t accept. I think you can’t live without your family and this is a sample of it.
My opinion:
I think the book is different then other books. Because it’s a subject you don’t think about it in the first place. The book is fair reliable and I like that because I can imagine how it’s in real life something like a film in my head. The subject could happen today or tomorrow its timeless. I think it’s a good book because you can learn how important your family is. And you can see how the Chinese culture is and how you can change if you going to another country.
