Detective work by John Escott
Paul gets a job for the summer holidays at Repsom museum. He is going to work with Anna Wain. They make an exhibition that shows things that happened in Repsom in the past. On that day a very old necklace arrives from the Gilbertson family, the museum has it insured for a hundred thousand pounds. Many TV cameras are filming everything that happens in the room.
Some weeks later the alarm rings and the necklace is stolen. The police comes in and asks questions to the employees. Everyone thinks: Is the thief one of us? Paul becomes most suspected because he only just works at the museum and because he has stolen cigarettes earlier.
The next day Paul is busy with the pirates display, when he discovered the necklace. He does not decide to say it to the director because he already is a suspect and is doing research of his own. He suspects everyone. Paul has a number of squat conversations with the police force, because he is the main suspect. This gives more certainty to Paul that that he must find the real thief.
Then Paul get a good idea. He breaks something by the pirates display and says to his colleagues that the pirates display is damaged and he will fix it the next morning. (He thinks: if someone of my colleagues has done it, he or she will come to obtain the necklace in the evening or in the night).
That evening he hides himself in the show prison. Then he heard a noise of breaking glass. A person came into the room. With torchlight he or she took out the Gilbertson necklace. The thief gives a little laugh. Paul recognised that laugh. It is of Derek (his colleague). Paul goes to Derek. He asked Derek how this could happen. Derek tells Paul that he paid for the robber stable. On that moment there is a hard detonation sounds. The noise of a gun. Paul looks up to see who was shooting and he sees a person with a dark shape and a hood. Paul watched the hooded person grab the diamond necklace from Derek’s hand. Derek was on the floor and bleeding from his shoulder. Now the person was following Paul. Paul ran to the prison display and got down on the floor. Then he heard feet coming up on to the platform of the prison display. Paul closes the cell door and locked the door. He runs to the office of the director and rings the ambulance and the police force. He runs to the office of the director and rings the ambulance and the police force.
The police and the ambulance came and take the thieves. The thief with the gun was Mrs. Gilbertson. She has need money and asked Derek to steal the necklace for money. When Derek heard that Paul would work at the pirates display, he went to obtain the necklace and he asked more money. Mrs. Gilbertson has a plan considered to kill Derek. Derek and Mrs. Gilbertson go to prison and Paul can come work in the museum when he has finished his training.
