Introduction to characters and outline of the plot

Four weddings and a funeral tells the story of Charles, but it’s also the story of Charles’s friends. Scarlett, A young woman who shares a flat with Charles, she’s not his girlfriend and hasn’t found the man of her dreams yet. Tom, a rich but not very clever young man. Fiona, Tom’s sister. She is very clever and elegant, unlike her brother. She doesn’t have a boyfriend because she is in love with Charles. Henrietta, She is an old girlfriend of Charles’s and she is still in love with him. People often call her ‘Duck-face’ behind her back. Gareth, a loud friend of Charles, who is gay. Matthew, Gareth’s boyfriend. He’s kind and intelligent. David is Charles’s younger brother and he is deaf. He can only speak in sign language.
It starts with the wedding of Angus and Laura. Charles is their best man and arrives late as usual. There, Charles meets Carrie… She is an American woman. He finds her very attractive and it is love at first sight. They spend the night together but she goes back to the USA.
Three months later, he sees her again at the second wedding of Bernard and Lydia, who met at the first wedding. Charles is, once again, late. He sees Henrietta who starts to cry the minute Charles talks to her. Carrie is also there and announces that she is engaged to Hamish, a Scottish man, who is really rich. One month later Charles receives an invitation to a third wedding: it’s Hamish and Carrie’s wedding. So he goes to a gift shop and there, he sees Carrie.. He spends the afternoon with her and tells her he loves her. She says that’s very sweet & walks away. A few months later he goes to Scotland with all his friends… You would have guessed it, he’s late once again. He is devastated when he hears the vows. His chance for happiness (with Carrie) is gone! But his gay friend, Gareth, proposes a toast to love because there is no wedding ring in there group and he’d like to go to a wedding of someone he really loves. Unfortunately Gareth dies and Charles has to attend the funeral. Matthew steps forward and reads from a book. “He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song. I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.”
Then It’s the fourth wedding, but the book doesn’t immediately say who’s wedding it is. We do know it’s Charles wedding, but we don’t know who the bride is. And if you want to know you’ll have to read the book yourself.
