Lord of the flies
By William Golding

I read the book ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding. William Golding studied at Oxford, and later he was a soldier in the second worldwar. He joined the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. After the war he returned to England, and worked as a teacher en writer. In 1983 he won the nobelprice for literature.
‘Lord of the Flies’ his most famous book. He says it resulted from his experiences in the war.
Two films are made about the book. One by Peter Brook in 1963 and the other by Harry Hook in 1990.

The book is about a group of British boys, all between six and twelve years old, who are dropped on an island. Ralph, one of the oldest boys decides to search for the rest of the boys. He blows a conch and meets the other boys. They vote for Ralph as leader, although Jack disagrees. Jack gets his own choir of hunters.
Ralph’s group builds huts and they make a fire, because they hope a passing ship will see them.
But then their’s a rumour about a beast. Jack and Ralph are going to have a look. They see a dead airman, and they think it’s the beast. The boys are really terrified, and they give the beast a pig’s head to pleas it. Simon, who didn’t believe there really was a beast, wants to examine it, but he thinks the head is talking. He faints.
Later he searches for the beast. Then he sees the dead airman. He wants to tell it to the other boys, but they think he’s the beast and they kill him. Ralph feels really responsible for his death.
Later Jack and Ralph are having a lot of quarrels, but it comes out to a fight. During the fight Piggy gets killed by accident. Ralph flees into the wood. Suddenly he sees an officer, who came the save them. All the boys start to cry.

I liked the book, but sometimes it’s long-winded. The writer describes a lot of places on the island in a difficult language, and it’s difficult to concentrate on it. what’s really good about the book, is that the writer gives a very good impression of the characters from the persons. I could really imagine myself in them, although they sometimes do strange things.
Anyway, it’s worth reading.
