Main characters:
Adeline Yen Mah:
The writer, she was born in China in 1937. Her mother died after giving her birth, so her family thought she had brought bad luck.
Aunt Baba:
The sister of YeYe, Adeline’s grandpa. She opened a bank in 1924. Adeline get much of love from aunt Baba.
Father Joseph:
Son of YeYe, he was good at school, especially in English. He became Catholic and changed his name. He didn’t go to the university, but became an office boy in YeYe’s company.
YeYe:
Grandpa of Adeline, father of Joseph. First he supported his family by hiring boats, but he didn’t like that and he goes (with his family) to Tiangjin.
Jeanne Virginie Prosperi (Niang, Chinese word for mother)
She was French and Joseph and Jeanne married soon, but Jeanne wasn’t friendly, Adeline and her brothers and sisters were afraid to her.
Summary:
This book is the life story and family history of Adeline Yen Mah. Her father married soon after the dead of Adeline’s mother. This woman (Niang) got two children. In 1939 there was a great flood and in the same year the Second World War broke out. The whole family went to Shanghai because father worked there. When Adeline and Niang had a dispute, Adeline went out of the house. When she returned there wasn’t any pleasant time. After the Second World War, the Japanese came to China and Adeline was brought to Tianjin, to the Sacred Heart School and Orphanage.
YeYe became ill and died in March 1952. In August 1952, Adeline went with James to England to be a medical student. When she finished the study, she started to work at the hospital. When she worked at the hospital for seven months, she received a proposal to work in America, she accepted it and there she met Byron and married to him; she got a son: Roger. But Byron wasn’t a good husband, and after a few years the divorced. Later she married to Bob Mah and got here second child, her daughter Ann.
In May 1988 her father died after a long sick-bed.
