Title : The Horse Whisperer
Author : Nicholas Evans
Number of pages : 451 Points : 6

I. What is the setting?
Time: I think in 1994. The time between the accident and the death of Tom Booker takes about a year. The accident happens in the winter and Tom dies at the end of the summer. There's flashforward that takes place a year after Tom Bookers' death.
Place: New York: where Annie lives (she lives there on Monday, Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday and Friday, because she works in New York).
Montana: where the range of the Bookers is.
Chatham: a village where Grace lives with her father, Annie lives there in the weekend.

II. Explain the title :
The horse whisperer is a man who heals horses and understands them. In this story The Horse Whisperer is Tom Booker the horse whisperer. He's the one who heals Pilgrim.

III. What is the theme of the novel ?
The message of the book is something like 'when you do it because you love someone, there's a way'. That's how I see it. In almost every person in the book the message returns. For example, Annie goes to Montana with Grace, because she wants her to be happy again. So she wants it becuase she loves Grace. And finally the relation between them works out well again.

IV. Did you like the book ? Give reasons from the contents of the book(>20 words)
Yes, I loved the story. I really liked it, because in the past I liked horses too. During the reading, I had the feeling that I really understood the thoughts of Tom Booker and the horses. I felt a connection with Annie too, because I have a bit the same strategy of thinking like her. I could also feel the feelings of Grace, it was very recognisable. The writer described every detail very well, at the end of the book you know everything about the most important persons and that is very nice. For example: you know everything about the past of Annie and Robert.

V. Imagine you are the writer of the book. Which passage did you write with most pleasure? Why?
I think I would have written the passage in which Grace and Judith were horse riding and getting an accident with most pleasure, because as a writer you can decide what happens when en how. A lot of things happened at the same time so you have to think of a lot of details.

VI. Which character in the book do you admire / detest ? What qualities do you like / dislike? Please explain :
I admire Grace because she deals well with the new situation she is in. She gets a new leg and lives in a different neighbourhood, so that's a very big change. I don´t know if I could deal with her situation so well like she does. I can understand her thoughts. She is very sad of her horse and Grace got worried about Pilgrim.

VII. Think of an alternative title for this book and explain this new title.
New title: Pilgrim
Explanation: Grace loves her horse Pilgrim. The whole book was about her horse Pelgrim Grace and her friend Judith had had an accident. Grace lost her leg, her friend Judith and Gulliver. Pilgrim (her horse) was physically and mentally in a bad shape.

VIII. Tell in at least 75 words how the book ends .
The morning after that Grace was so angry that she took out Pilgrim and went for a ride with him. When Annie woke up, she got worried. They found out that Pilgrim was missing and Tom and Frank (Toms' brother ) went after him. Finally they found him surrounded by wild horses. The leader of the wild horses wanted to fight with Pilgrim. Tom walked towards them and got Pilgrim and Grace away of the horse. But instead of leaving Tom stands still. Then he moved towards the stallion and the stallion staggered and the hooves of the animal landed on the head of Tom. He was dead. To Grace it seemed like he wanted to die.
The story goes on a year later. Annie and Robert got divorced and Annie has a son that looks pretty the same as Tom Booker...

IX. Photocopy one page from a favourite / striking passage (Not first or last pages) Add it to this report.
Explain your selection : (blz 112, 113)
I like this part because Annie wants to help Pilgrim. Annie is searching for someone who can help Pilgrim. In the Library she reads about horse whisperers, those are people who heal horses physically and mentally. In this part a horse whisperer called Tom Booker is introduced. I read something about his past and what he does nowadays. He lives in Montana on the ranch that belonged to his parents. He lives there with his family. Annie wants him to take a look at Pilgrim. When he's in the neighbourhood he stops by but when he sees in what bad shape the horse is in and how the sons of Mrs. Dyer treat the horses, he goes away angry. Then Annie got the feeling that the only way for her daughter and the whole family to heal is that Pilgrim must get better. So she's travelling with Grace and Pilgrim across two states to go to Montana and see Tom Booker.

X. In question VIII you described the real end of the book. Now think of a different ending. Use your imagination and tell in at least 150 WORDS how the book could also have ended according to you.
The morning after that Grace was so angry she took out Pilgrim and went for a ride with him. They were so happy, but Grace feels guilty that she have left her mother. She is so glad that Pilgrim is himself again. Grace got off her horse and wants to hug him. She said: ‘Pilgrim, I love you so, give me a hug’. Pilgrim didn’t like it and kicked at Grace. Grace had so much pain of her new leg. That she screamed: ‘Pilgrim, WHY?’ Pilgrim was shocked. He ran away. Grace lay on the ground and she was crying, she saw blood!
Pilgrim saw Tom, Tom saw Pilgrim. They run to each other. Pilgrim look frightened to Tom. Tom said: ‘Pilgrim, what’s happened? Pilgrim shook with his head and ran away Tom was running with him. Then Pilgrim stopped running. Tom heard someone crying and screaming. It was Grace! Tom ran towards her. ‘What has happened to you’ he said. Grace didn’t answer his question. She grabbed to her new leg. ‘Let me see’ Tom said. ‘AAAAAAAAA don’t touch my leg!’ Grace screamed. ‘Grace, it’s not good’. ‘You must go to the hospital’ said Tom frightened. He called the ambulance.
A couple of hours later..
Grace opened her eyes, she was in the hospital and she was very tired. The nurse told her that her new leg was twisted, but everything is going to be all right!
1 day later..
Grace was at home again and Pilgrim and Grace were still big friends. Her mother Annie said to Grace: ‘Grace, you have had a brother’. Grace can’t believe it. Annie said ‘Yes Grace, it is true’. ‘I got pregnant although the doctors had said that I could never have children’. Robert came back to Annie. And they were a real happy family again.
