Plot: 8 people, who do not know each other, are invited to go to Indian Island, and everyone got different invitations. Wargrave got an invitation from an old friend, Claythorne got hired as the secretary of Mrs. Owen, Lombard also got hired, Brent got invited by someone who claims to have shared a guesthouse with her, Armstrong has to report on the condition of Owen’s wife, who is ill, and Mr. Blore got hired by Mr. Owen too. When they arrive Mr. and Mrs. Rogers tell them the owner has not yet arrived. When they go to their rooms, they see that in every bedroom a little poem is hanging on the wall: ‘Ten little Indians’. After dinner they all go into the drawing room where all of a sudden they hear a voice listing the crimes each of them has made. Mrs. Rogers faints and gets taken upstairs. They all find out that they all got here by different invitations and suspect that U.N. Owen, the owner, might not be real. They all defend themselves by explaining what happened, except for Emily. Everyone wants to try to leave the next morning but Tony Marston thinks they should solve the case. He takes a drink, chokes and dies. After this everyone starts to die mysteriously. Mr. Rogers tries to wake up his wife that night but he can’t. she had an overdose on drugs and died. There were 10 little Indian statues on the table but now there are only 8 left. They also start to notice that the murders are very similar to the first two verses of the poems about the ten little Indians. Blore, Amstrong and Lombard decide that the owner must be the killer and decide to look for him, but they can’t find him. The third victim is Macarthur. He does not return from outside for dinner and when they find him, he got a blow to the head. Mr. Roger is next. No one has seen him, but they notice another statue is missing. They soon find him in the kitchen with a hatchet in the back of his neck. After they put him in his room and had breakfast, they decide to discuss everything. Emily doesn’t feel very well and says she’ll stay at the table. When everyone gets back, they see she died because of a fatal injection. The group decides to lock away any weapons or other things that can be used as such. But lombard’s gun is missing.
Vera goes to take a shower, but feels something in her neck and screams. Everyone comes upstairs except for Wargrave. They run back downstairs and find him in a chair with a missing red curtain wrapped around him and a gray wig, and shot in the head. That night, Blore hears a noise outside at sees that Armstrong is missing. Him and Lombard go outside and leave Vera in the house. But Armstrong is gone. The next morning the last three stay outside, when Blore wants to go inside and goes by himself. He gets crushed by a marble clock. Vera and Lombard stay outside on the cliffs and see something down on the beach. They climb down and see Armstrong’s body. They move the body and all of a sudden Vera is pointing Lombard’s gun at him. He tries to get it, but she shoots him in the heart. Vera goes back to the house and to her room. She thinks about Hugo and remembers the last line of the poem, when she sees a noose hanging from a hook, and hangs herself.
In the end a fisherman finds a letter in a bottle and takes it to the police. It is a letter from Wargrave, saying he committed all the murders and explaining why he did it. He writes that he wanted to punish the people who were actually guilty of murder, but wouldn’t be convicted.
Themes: the unknown, justice
Comments: I thought it was a very good book. I had some trouble reading the way Christie writes in the beginning, but the more you read, the easier it is to understand. I thought the book was very interesting, to see all these murders happening and every time you would have a different suspect in your head. It definitely was surprising that the murderer was also the sixth victim, it completely messed with your mind. The prologue was really strange to read, how wargrave is just writing this letter with every single detail in it, why he did it; because he wanted to punish them. I’ll definitely start reading more of Agatha Christie’s books.
