Sinds 27 november draait de film Oorlogswinter in de bioscoop. Wij hebben 3 maal het boek van de film en 3 knijpkatten om weg te geven.

Summary
The book is an excerpt from Uncle Oswald's diaries, published by his nephew in 1979. Oswald wrote in his diary, when he was forty-three, how he became a wealthy man. He tells how he travelled to Sudan, because he had heard about a Blister Beetle and its powder, which is an aphrodisiac. He heard a story about it from his father's old friend. He finds the Blister Beetle powder and buys a lot of it. He travels back to France, where he is staying for a year until he can study, and makes an aphrodisiac-pill with a little bit Blister Beetle powder in it. It goes very fast and very soon everyone wants his pills. Than he finds out that his chemistry tutor discovered how to freeze sperm. He thinks of a plan, with the beautiful Yasmin as bait. They are going to 'steel' semen from geniuses and kings and will sell it when those men are dead, to healthy women who want a baby from a genius or a previous king.
When they had every European genius and king, they take a break for a month and the plan is that they go to America after the one month during vacation. After four weeks exactly Oswald goes to the Semens Home, where all the semen of the great people is stored. He finds a letter, wrote by Yasmin. In it, she tells Oswald that she and A.R. Woresley, the chemistry teacher who always stayed in England and watched the semen, are married and that they've took all the semen. They moved to some place very far from England, and the reason that they've stolen the semen is that they think they did all the work and Oswald hasn't got any rights to his share of the money. So that's how he didn't became a wealthy man, he says on the last few pages of the book. He did, however, became a multi-millionaire by a great plan. He obtained sole rights to all beetle hunting, gather the native beetle hunters together and form them in an organized unit. He built a little factory in Khartoum and processed his Beetles and manufactured in quantity 'Frofessor Yousoupoff's Famous Potency Pills'. He would package them in the factory, too, set up a secret underground sales unit with offices in a few very important cities all over the world. After all that he turned the whole thing over to a Greek syndicate in exchange for one half of the profits.

About the main character:
Oswald doesn't care. He just wants to have fun, he tells the story of how he became a very rich man, the whole time he was telling it he was forty-three years old. He has forbidden himself to have a girl twice, so he has had a lot of girls and women at the and of the book! At first he wants to be very rich, doing whatever he can do without thinking about the money he spends the whole day. But, he wants to have fun during making so much money. And after making the money, he only wants to make more fun in his life. He is very clever, intelligent and very enterprising, too.

When did the book start to interest you?
Well, right at the beginning! It is such a funny book! I couldn't stop laughing, but at the and I was disappointed too. I didn't really saw the marriage between Yasmin and A.R. Woresley coming, and the main character Oswald didn't see it coming either. It was a little weird at the beginning because of the nephew-thing, that he had published his diaries, but than it became very interesting and I really enjoyed reading this book, even if there were difficult words in it sometimes.
