The story in 10 lines:
James’s parents are eaten up by an angry rhinoceros that had escaped from the London zoo. He stays with his selfish, lazy and cruel Aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. He mustn't play with children, his aunts say. He wouldn’t be in this mess. One day he met a mysterious man who gives him a bag of magic crocodile tongues. James swindles the bag above a peach-tree. The peach-tree gets a giant peach that breaks off the tree when James met giant insects in it. The giant insects become big friends of James. They travel by sky, by sea and by land. Then they came by a land, New York. He met children and the insects found his place in New York to live and work.
My opinion:
I like this book as much. It’s tense, funny and indeed instructive. When I’ve seen the title of this book, I remember me I had this book to! So I read this book in English first and then in Dutch.
Character description:
- James Henry Trotter:
He has got blond hair and his skin is rose. His personality is very friendly and smart. He’s 7 years old.
- Aunt Sponge:
She is very fat. Like a Sponge with al those spots! Her hair is blond and curly. Her personality is angry, selfish lazy and cruel.
- Aunt Spiker:
This lady is very thin. Like a Spiker. Her hair is black and straight. The personality is the same like Aunt Sponge.
- The Old-Green-Grasshopper:
He’s an insect, like the other 6 below him. He’s very wise, old and green. He’s musician.
- The Spider:
She is very helpful and good spinner.
- The Ladybird:
She take care about James. She isn’t a really main character, but she is in this book important. She has got nine black spots on her scarlet shell.
- The Centipede:
He is very pigheaded. He sings rhymes when they are happy. The Earthworm is a enemy from him. He has got 242 legs instead of 1000. He’s a braggart too.
- The Glow-Worm:
He just gives light… But is one team-member!
- The Earthworm:
He is blind and the biggest enemy from the Centipede.
- The Silkworm:
He is green and this insect came on the half of this story.
About Roald Dahl:
This man was born in Llandaff, Wales, on September 13, 1916.
Roald had five sisters and a brother. His father died when Roald was four. Also one of its sisters died young.
As from its seventh year he was on a boarding school. He was hereafter sick of the school life so much, that he does not want learn further. On eighteen-year-old age Dahl took part in forwarding to Newfoundland. After its return in United Kingdom he will work for Shell, firstly in London, later in Tanzania.
During the Second World War he was a fighting pilot at the RAF in Africa. At a failed emergency landing he got seriously wounded. Roald Dahl was for half a year in a hospital in Egypt with burns and skullbasisfracture. He remained love be complete life charge its back, as a result of which he ran with difficulty. Dahl got a job at the air power in America.
He made his debut with the tale A Piece or Cake, concerning his war experiences, in the Saturday Evening posts.
In 1953, he married Neal with Patricia. She was an American actress. When they had children, Roald Dahl also started to write for children. His wife got a brain hemorrhage. She remained invalided, but by the aid of Roald Dahl she learned to talk, to run, and read. The children of Roald Dahl are called: By means of, Tessa, Theo, Ophelia and Lucy. Theo, when he was four months old, collided with a taxi in his pram. He was seriously wounded, had bleeing in his brain and had been very frequently operated. When he was seven yearsold, he died due to a rare complication of measles.
He died on 23 november 1990 at the age of seventy-four because he had leukaemia.
This was the motto that he lived by:
My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But ah my foes and oh my friends
It gives a lovely light.
