(1990)LORD OF THE FLIES SUMMARY
The story starts with a plain crash. The survivors get stranded at an uninhabited island. Among the survivors are Ralph and Piggy. Now that the island is occupied by children only, they want to point out a leader. Ralph takes this task upon him and he doesn’t fulfil his job poorly. He builds shelters to sleep, calls together meetings and last but certainly not least: he comes up with the idea of building a fire as a signal for a passing ship. But Jack, another boy who also wanted to be elected as the leader, doesn’t think the fire is important. His main concern is meat. He becomes the leader of the hunters.
A short while after this division in tasks, something already goes wrong. The fire grew way too big and probably killed several children.
Several days passed. While Jack is still obsessed with catching pigs, Ralph an Piggy continue building shelters. Those aren’t only against the weather, but also to protect the smallest children. These ‘little ones” are having nightmares about a horrible beast.
Time passes and the boys get used to the life on the island. When Ralph and Piggy relax at the beach, they suddenly spot a ship at the horizon. The boys who were in charge of guarding the fire however, are involved in hunting. When the ship doesn’t notice the island, Ralph becomes furious. From that point on, the conflict between Jack (one of the hunters) and Ralph (the actual leader) grows.
Meanwhile, the tumult about a “beast” increases. More little children complain about this monster. The big boys deny its existence. When Simon comes up with “maybe it’s just us”’ everyone laughs.
The following night a dead man drops out of the sky, dangling on a parachute. Everyone was scared to death. Jack remarks that there’s one part of the island they have not yet explored. After a team went to search for the monster, they are convinced it doesn’t live there.
Things don’t go so smoothly on the island. The boys start to lose their common sense. Even Ralph deliberately wounds one of his peers. When Jack and Ralph climb up a mountain, they find themselves face to face with the monster.
The mood among the boys the following morning is quite depressed. Because of the beast on the top of the mountain, they can’t make a fire signal there anymore. Ralph makes everything even worse by mocking Jack’s hunters. Jack runs away and takes some of the big boys with him. Meanwhile Simon discovers a pig’s head covered with flies. The lord of the flies claims something important: “the monster is nothing that can be hunted and killed, but comes from within the boys themselves. It is part of them. “
Simon rushes to his friends to share his discovery. But when he arrives at the beach, he finds himself in a pitch of terror. The hunters were just performing their “pig killing dance”. Simon is being slaughtered.
No one dares to mention this accident the day after. In the meantime, the cruelties go on: Jack has boys tied up and beaten for no reason, Ralph’s camp is being attacked by “the hunters” and so on.
The final battle takes place: Jack and Ralph fight. When Piggy tries to stop them, Jack’s hunters drop a large rock on top of him.
Afterwards, Ralph has to run away from an angry mob. On the beach, he runs into a naval officer. When this person sees that the boys had been having war, he expresses his disappointment with: “'I should have thought that a pack of British boys would have been able to put up a better show than that.”
