Boekverslag Jane Austen

Emma

Bookreport

Title

The title of the book is “Emma”.
The book is written by Jane Austen.
I didn’t read a book from her before.

Information about the author

Jane Austen (1775-1817) spent most of her life in Hampshire, in the south of England. She never was married but she was very happy. She loved her family and friends. She wrote some beautiful story’s: Emma, Sense and sensibility and Pride and prejudice.

Time

The story takes place somewhere in 1800. In the story everybody wears dresses with heads or very expensive looking suites.
The time is familiar for me because I read more books that took place somewhere in 1800 and we learned about it in history class.
I don’t think that the story would have been different if it had taken place in a different time because the book is about matchmaking and lots of people do that, also in this time. I only think that the clothes would have been different if it had taken place in an other time.

Summary
Emma Woodhouse is beautiful, clever and rich. She lives alone with her father
in a big house named Hartfield. She lives in a small village called Highbury. Emma spends a lot of her time thinking about matchmaking between her friends. Her governess, Miss Taylor, has just left the house because she’s getting married. Emma doesn’t like it that Miss Taylor is away, but her life goes on. Then she meets Harriet, a poor girl with no family. Emma decides that she has to make a match for Harriet with Mr. Elton.
Robert Martin, a farmer, is in love with Harriet and he asks her to marry him. Harriet tells him that she has to think about it. Harriet tells Emma that Robert Martin did ask her to marry him. Emma says to Harriet that she has to say no, because Robert Martin is “just” a farmer. Then everything went the wrong way. Mr. Elton doesn’t love Harriet, he loves Emma! Emma is a shamed of herself because she made a terrible mistake. Robert Martin loves Harriet very much and Harriet loves him to! Emma try’s one more time to matchmake Harriet with somebody else, but this time it also went wrong. Then it looks like everything is going to be allright. Emma falls in love with Mr. Knightley and Harriet falls in love again with Robert Martin. So there were two weddings in Highbury that year, Emma married Mr. Knightley and Harriet married Robert Martin. After that Emma decided never to matchmake again.

It is a closed ending because everything went ok again and Emma lived happely with Mr. Knightley.

Main Characters

Emma Woodhouse:
She’s got red hair and brown eyes. She is 21 years old and she loves to matchmake people. She is very brave, but sometimes she’s a little bit selfish.
Harriet Smith:
She’s got blond hair and blue eyes. She’s 17 years old and a very poor girl without any family. She adores Emma because she is very beautiful, rich and has a lot of friends. She is very brave, and she follows Emma in every direction.
Mr. Elton:
Mr. Elton is a handsome young clergyman with a comfortable home. He’s got brown hair and brown eyes. He is secretly in love with Emma.
Mr. Knightley:
Mr. Knightley is a very rich cleverly man but says little. He’s got black/grey hair with grey/blue eyes and he always is wearing a suit. He is humorous on his own way.

I don’t like Emma because she thinks that she can solve every problem, and that isn’t true. She’s also very selfish and brave, that is also something that i don’t like. I would not act like the main character does because they are all very rich, brave and sometimes a little bit selfish.

Explain the title
The title of the book is Emma because that is the name of the main character, I don’t think that the title means or stands for something special. It’s just the name of the main character.

Theme
The theme of the book is love because everybody in the book is getting married with each other and Emma is matchmaking a lot of people with each other.

My Opinion

I dislike the book because it’s very boring and predictable.
I’ll use the words boring, easy and dull for the book because i didn’t like it at all. All the characters are rich and selfish and Emma is always trying to matchmake people with each other and that is during the whole book.

Recommend
I wouldn’t recommend the book to somebody else because it’s very boring and predictable. The whole book is about matchmaking which ends in a very bad mistake. In the middle of the book I already knew that Emma and Mr. Knightley were getting married and everything is going to be allright.
