Author
'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy' is written by Douglas Adams. Adams was born in Cambridge, United Kingdom, in 1952. He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex and St John's College, Cambridge where he studied English.
After graduation he spent several years contributing material to radio and television shows as well as writing, performing and sometimes directing stage revues in London, Cambridge and on the Edinburgh Fringe. He worked at various times as hospital porter, chicken shed cleaner, bodyguard, radio producer and script editor of 'Doctor Who'.

Story
'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy' was first published in 1979 by Pan Books. The copyright is by Douglas Adams. It contains 159 pages. The story takes place in the Galaxy in the seventies. The story is told chronologically.

Characters
There are four main characters in 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy'.
#Arthur Dent: He is human and the best friend of Ford Prefect. After the destruction on earth, he is the only survivor. Arthur doesn't realise that the trip he is making through the Galaxy is for real.

#Ford Prefect: He is a roving researcher for the wholly remarkable book 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy'. Ford comes to earth to save Arthur from the destruction of Earth.

#Zaphod Beeblebrox: He is the President of the Galaxy. Zaphod Beeblebrox is very much a figurehead, he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of finely judged outrage. For this reason Zaphod is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it. On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had, he has already spent two of his ten Presidential years in prison for fraud.

#The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy: It is not an Earth book, it is never published on Earth and it is never seen or even heard by any Earthman. In fact it is the most remarkable book ever to come out of the great publishing corporations of Ursa Minor, of which no Earthman has ever heard either. It is the book that helps Hitch-Hikers through the Galaxy.

Summary
One morning Arthur Dent looks out of the window and sees a great yellow bulldozer outside. Arthur goes outside and starts a row with the man who's ordered to break down the house for a bypass. This is when Ford Prefect arrives. Arthur his friend is from out of space. He has been stuck on earth for a good fifteen years. Ford takes Arthur to the pub and tells him that the earth is about to be destroyed within minutes. A few minutes later the Vogons arrive to inform the people of earth that they're about to blow up the earth. The reason is that they want to build a hyper spatial express route through the star system. After the Earth has been destroyed by the Vogons, Arthur and Ford hitch-hike a flying saucer of the Vogons. When they are thrown out of the disk, they fall into the ship of the President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox. Ford and Zaphod know each other because Zaphod is a semi-cousin of Ford.
Zaphod has stolen the Heart of Gold. It is the newest ship in the entire Galaxy. He is searching for the planet-making planet Magrathea. The people of Magrathea have build al the planets in the Galaxy. Now they are upset because the Earth is destroyed, so they have to built a new one. The purpose of the Earth was to find the meaning of life. But the Vogons destroyed it five minutes before they had the answer. Arthur, Ford and Zaphod meet Benjy and Frankie Mouse, they are mice and the real rulers of the Galaxy. Magrathea is a gateway to their own dimension. The mice want to keep Arthur and use his brain. They escape from Magrathea and go take a quick bite at The restaurant at the end of the universe.

Reading experience
The book was recommended to me by a friend. I decided to read the book because he said it was a very funny book. I expected a cool book, because the sentences on the back were fascinating. My expectation came true, 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy' is one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed very much while reading the book. The book must be realistic, because I believe that there is some out of space-life form. And maybe they are so stupid as in the book. You can't compare it with other books. It is unique because it has the strangest characters ever.
All the parts in the book impressed me, because I was very excited about them. All the aspects of the book are successful. I would advise others to read the book, because they would have a lot of fun.
