Chapter 1
The leading figure is Karana (her secret name) or Won-a-pa-lei, which means: "The girl with the long black hair". Her father is the chief of Ghalas-at named chief Chowig. Karana is 12 years old and her brother Ramo is six years old. One day there came a chip to their island, to hunt sea-otter. Captain Orlov and Chief Chowig arranged that one part would be for Orlov and one part for Chowig (of the proceeds).
Chapter 2
Captain Orlov and his aleut hunters camped on the island. Karana has also got a sister, called Ulape, who thaugt she had seen a girl among the hunters. On the island blows a strong wind. The village of Karana's tribe was called Ghalas-at, near Coral Cove (a little harbour).
Chapter 3
Everyone in the village was affraid the aleuts would try to sail off without paying. So they watched them all the time.
Chapter 4
The aleuts were leaving without paying one day so all the men hurried to Corall Cove, and Chief Chowig talked to Captain Orlov. Orlov didn't gave enough and all the men fought. Finally the ship was leaving and many men of the tribe were killed. Also Chief Chowig.
Chapter 5
The new chief was called Kimki. He decided to leave the island in a big canoe, searching for a country to settle the whole tribe.
Chapter 6
It seemed that Kimki didn't return. Matasaip had taken Kimki's place. He was affraid that the aleut would return. Then on a day, a ship came, now with white instead of red seils. Kimki had sent the ship to take the tribe to another place.
Chapter 7
The ship would leave immediately, because the weather became bad. Everyone walked to Coral Cove and then Ramo said he had forgotten his fishing spear. He could not go and get it. Vhen the ship was leaving Karana couldn't find Ramo. Then she saw him, alone on the island, with his fishing spear, left behind. The ship could not return. Then Karana flung herself into the sea and (however she did it) swum back to her brother.
Chapter 8
There were many wild dogs on the island and Ramo had been caught by them few times later. He was dead: Karana was alone.
Chapter 9
Se went sleeping on the rocks and made weapons to protect herself by the wild dogs. The ship didn't came back.
Chapter 10
She found a canoe (the tribe had made it because they would be able to get away quickly when the aleuts would came back) and wanted to leyve the island. When she was far away, the canoe started leaking and hed to turn. At last she reached the island.
Chapter 11
She decided to kill the wild dogs because they killed Ramo. She also made a new house in the headland near the spring near Coral Cove and the north coast.
Chapter 12
She made her new house and wanted to make more weapons like bows, arrows, spears. She needed the tusklike teeth op a bull sea-elephant to make points on spears. These were hard to get.
Chapter 13
She went to the place where sea-elephants live and watched a fight between to bulls. Then one of them came to her and in hurry to get away she fell down and hurt her leg. She found her way back home.
Chapter 14
She couldn't go out for 5 days but than had to because she needed water. When she came limping in the spring and fetched some water, she noticed all the wild dogs were around her in the bushes. She crowled in the mouth of a cave and was safe. She made there another house where she could stau when she was hurt again. Then she went to the place of the sea-elephants and took teeth of a dead sea bull (which died in the battle).
Chapter 15
She killed some wild dogs also the leader with the yellow eyes. Later she was looking for him ( a dog left behind by the aleuthunters) and found him and saw he wasn't dead yet. She took him home and cleaned his wounds. She called him Rontu (yellow eyes).
Chapter 16
She found a cave where she could leave her canoe, where he was safe. She also saw there the biggest devilfish she had ever seen and decided to catch him one day. Rontu r 17became her best friend
Chapter 17
Karana was affraid Ronty would go and live with the wild dogs again. Rontu went, but after he had fought with the wild dogs he returned to her and the wild dogs were never seen by Karana anymore.
Chapter 18
She caught two young of a red-winged blackbird so she had another two friends, Karana made a nice new skirt and a pair of sandals.
Chapter 19
She found the devil-fish again and tried to catch him with a special spear. It was very dangerous, and Rontu and Karana were both hurt of the long arm of the fish. She never tried to catch another devil-fish.
Chapter 20
She went out on the sea to the Black Cove with Rontu. When she was in the cave she couldn't go out, the tide was coming in. She had to sleep there. Two summers later she saw a ship coming, from the aleurs, she decided to move.
Chapter 21
She went to a cave in the ravine. There was a girl among the hunters and that girl discovered the cave of Karana and Rontu. She didn't tell the hunters and they become friends. Karana got a necklace of her.
Chapter 22
The girls name was Tutok and Mah-nay, she came everyday to the cave of wan-a-pa-lei. Few days later she had gone. Karana missed.
Chapter 23
She found a young hurt otter and called him Mon-a-nee. (Little Boy with Large Eyes). One day te otter was gone and Karana went living in her old house on the headland again.
Chapter 24
She found another young bird, a white gull. The otter came also back and had young. So it was a girl and Karana changed her name into Won-a-nee (Little Girl with Large Eyes). She became friends with all kind of animals.
Chapter 25
Rontu died.
Chapter 26
The wild dogs came again and Karana caught one of them, the son of Rontu. After a little time they became good friends and Rontu-Ara (son of Rontu) never left her.
Chapter 27
While she was on the sandspit with her canoe an earthquake came. When she came back to Rontu-Ara in their house pieces of rocks fell down. But not on their house.
Chapter 28
All her weapons and her canoe were damaged. She made a new canoe and while she was working on it she saw a ship coming. Then she heard men calling her, but when she came on that spot, the ship was already leaving.
Chapter 29
After 2 springs the ship came back. Karana, Rontu-Ara and the little birds went with the men away from the Island of Blue Dolphins. Karana heard that the ship with all the rest of her family had not survived, their ship had sunk.
