1. General
a. Author: Agatha Christie
b. Title: And then there were none
c. Year of publication: 1939
d. Genre: detective

2. Why did you choose this book?
Two years ago I saw a play of this book and that appealed to me very much. That’s why I decided to read this book. It was a shame though, that I already knew how the book would end.

3. Specifics
a. Where and when is the story set?
There are no actual dates mentioned in this book, but I think the story takes place in the time in which it was written (1939), because some things are quite old- fashioned. The story is set in Nigger Island, an island near the coast of Devon, England.
b. Briefly describe the main characters
 Justice Wargrave
In the end, this man appeared to be the one who set this whole murder thing up. In the epilogue he describes how and why he did it. He says his nature was a mass of contradictions; he has ‘an incurably romantic imagination’ (page 210) and that he has ‘a definite sadistic delight in seeing or causing death’ (page 211), but he took no pleasure in seeing someone innocent suffer. Mr. Justice Wargrave used to be a judge. But for some years he had been aware of a change within himself; he felt a desire to act instead of to judge. He wanted to commit a murder, and that shouldn’t be an ordinary murder, but a fantastical crime. Then the idea came to him: he went looking for people who all committed a murder, but were all quite untouchable by the law. So he choose nine other people, invited them to come to Nigger Island and then killed them one by one according to a nursery rhyme (a rhyme about ten little niggers) he remembered from his childhood. When everybody was dead, he killed himself in a very clever way.
 Dr. Armstrong
This man was invited to come to Nigger Island. He was picked because Wargrave charged him with causing the dead of Louisa Mary Clees. She was a patient of his. Armstrong was a bit drunk during the operation, that’s why she died. Wargrave thought Armstrong still had to pay for what he did. Armstrong actually helped Wargrave: Wargrave needed an ally for his plan, he selected dr. Armstrong for that. Wargrave knew all Armstrong’s suspicions were against Philip Lombard, Wargrave now pretended he also suspected Lombard. Wargrave told Armstrong he had a plan to find out who the murderer was: Wargrave should appear to be the next victim. If he was supposed to be dead he could move about the house and spy the unknown murderer. Armstrong was keen on this idea and they carried it out together. Only a little later Armstrong would find out Wargrave himself was the murderer, because Armstrong was pushed into the sea. He drowned and died.
 Vera Claythorne
She was also invited to come to Nigger Island. Wargrave charged her with causing the dead of a kid named Cyril. Vera actually survived this island adventure, because she was the last one who was alive (except for Wargrave, but she didn’t know that). But, all the murders made her go insane, that’s why she hanged herself.
c. Who is the speaker?
The story is told by an all- knowing speaker, only the epilogue is written by Mr. Justice Wargrave.
d. Does the story fit in the time period in which it was written?
Yes, it does. The language in this book is a bit old- fashioned and 1939 is quite a long time ago.

4. Thematical
a. What is the theme?
The themes are murder, suspicion and fear. The more people are killed, the more suspicious those remaining become of each other. They were all very afraid; they couldn’t trust anyone and started to suspect each other.
b. What is the main problem in the story?
The main problem is that all the people on this island are killed one by one.
c. Is this problem solved?
In the end, everybody is dead. The whole thing is a mystery to the police, they can’t solve it. Before he killed himself, Wargrave wrote his confession on a piece of paper, put it in a bottle and threw that bottle into the sea. In case someone ever finds that bottle, the mystery could be solved.
d. How would you deal with it?
If I’d be on an island with this kind of a lunatic, I would lock myself in my room. I can also imagine I would do the same thing Vera Claythorne did, because I think this kind of a situation would drive me completely insane.
e. What is the link between the title and the theme?
‘And then there were none’ is the last sentence of the nursery rhyme. All the ‘niggers’ are dead, they’re all murdered.

5. Select a passage from the text which appeals to you, elaborate on your choice.
I choose the last part of the epilogue (page 221), the part in which Justice Wargrave describes how he shot himself.
The epilogue appealed to me most. I thought the whole book was very thrilling, but it also frustrated me not to be able to find out who the murderer was. In the epilogue this all became clear.

6. Opinion
a. What is your opinion of this book?
I think this is a very nice and thrilling book. But most of all, I think it’s quite a clever story, because in the end everything seems right.
b. Would you recommend it to others? Why (not)?
In case you like boring books, you shouldn’t read this. But if you like nice and thrilling books, you should definitely read this, because it’s thrilling until the end!

7. Summary
