Klasgenoten stonden vroeger als hongerige hyena's om Jorieke heen. Klaar om het jonge hertje aan te vallen dat nog scoubidoutouwtjes had.

English summary of Thomasina, a book written by Paul Gallico.
Thomasina lives a happy and quiet live as the cat of Mary Ruadh MacDhui. She gets carried around a lot by Mary Ruadh, and sleeps on the girl’s bed. Mary Ruadh’s father, Andrew MacDhui, can’t stand Thomasina very well.
Andrew MacDhui has its own establishment for animal treatments. He works there a lot, but doesn’t like his work. He also is very pessimistic about the diseases his patients carry, and quickly kills them off.
One day, a boy named Geordie McNabb brings him a frog with a broken leg, but Andrew refuses to treat him. Almost in despair, Geordie uses his final option. He goes to the Glen in the forest, and leaves his frog under the Mercy Bell which hangs from a tree near a cottage. In that very same cottage, Lori lives. Lori is said to be a witch who speaks to fairytale creatures and takes care of ill animals.
After a few days, Andrew gets a new patient: the dog of a blind man. He doesn’t want to treat the animal, since it’s more than half-dead, but after a convincing talk with his friend Angus Peddie he realised he should at least try, because he would kill the “eyes” of the blind man if he refused. While he is treating the animal, Mary Ruadh comes in asking her father to take care of Thomasina, who had a strange illness. Andrew refuses to treat Thomasina, and chloroforms her. Mary Ruadh is shocked that her daddy killed her beloved pet, and refuses to talk to him ever again.
Life continues in the MacDhui family, but Mary Ruadh doesn’t give up staying silent towards her father. Mary Ruadh and her friends decide to organise a burial for Thomasina, so Mary Ruadh would be happier.
Lori sees this, and is shocked. She digs up the body of Thomasina, and sees her sleeping. Actually, Bast (an Egyptian Goddess) reincarnated into the body of Thomasina. Lori calls her Thalitha, and adopts her into her home.
Some time later, Andrew notices that he is losing patients to Lori. He is furious about it, because he is suffering because of this. He has his doubts at first, but later on he seeks confrontation with Lori to tell her she should stop to steal his patients. At that very same moment, Lori is treating an injured badger who she can’t heal on her own. When Andrew rings the Mercy Bell, and meets Lori, he suddenly forgot all his anger. Lori brightens up at once, and asks him to help her to heal the badger. Andrew doesn’t know what to do at first, but helps her anyway. After the badger is treated by the joint operation of Lori and Andrew, Andrew says he will return the next day to treat the badger. When Andrew drives towards Iveranoch, he notices that he has changed since the visit to Lori’s house. Andrew visits Lori multiple times afterwards.
Mary Ruadh still won’t speak. She remains silent and also becomes isolated from her friends because she doesn’t play or talk with them anymore. On one night, Mary Ruadh sees Thalitha in front of her window, and screams Thomasina’s name. But the cat runs away, and Mary Ruadh follows her. Andrew quickly stops Mary Ruadh before she gets lost.
Eventually Andrew summons doctor Stathstray. Stathstray says Mary Ruadh has become gravely ill. At first, she wouldn’t speak to her father to upset him, but now she has grown unable to. Stathstray also said this was the effect of a trauma, and that the illness keeps getting worse and worse. The only cure Andrew can think of is bringing Thomasina back, but he thinks that’s impossible since she is thought to be dead.
One day, Geordie and a two other friends of Mary Ruadh come to pay a visit to Andrew and his daughter. At first, they asked about Mary Ruadh, but they also came for something else. Near Iveranoch, a Gypsy camp is constructed. The gypsies give shows in return for money. Although the boys weren’t permitted to go there, they did went to see the show because they wanted to see a bear in real life. But instead of seeing a beautiful performance with a bear, what they did hope to see, they saw a show which would only appear in their nightmares. The gypsies mistreated their animals, and beat the bear several times. The boys where shocked, and asked Andrew to stop the gypsies and their evil ways. Andrew didn’t want to go at first, but eventually, some time later, he did.
Andrew got into his car and drove off to the gypsy encampment to go and investigate the matter. He bought a ticket for that night’s show. The performance began, and Andrew saw that the boys were right. The bear of the gypsies was heavily mistreated, and got hit again. Andrew became very mad about this, and stood up for the bear. He started a fire in his fury, which burned down the whole encampment.
After teaching the gypsies a valuable lesson, he went to the other animals to see if they were alright. There he finds Lori who is crying because the animals are all very ill and do not have a great chance of survival. Lori and Andrew free the animals, and let them escape, so they will at least be free when they die.
When Andrew came home, he heard that Mary Ruadh is dying. He hurried to his beloved daughter to keep her company, doing whatever he can to save her. Mary Ruadh survived the night. Andrew decided to go to Lori to warn her about his daughter and ask her to come with him. But when he arrived at the glen, he began to think more and more about his love for Lori, and instead of explaining the situation concerning Mary Ruadh, he confessed his love to her. Lori didn’t know what to do, because she didn’t know for sure if she loved him in an equal way. Andrew got upset, and, when he left the glen, he passed the grave in which Thomasina was buried. It is there that he realised what a fool he is, and that Mary Ruadh may die because of him.
At home again, Mary Ruadh is almost dead. Andrew has a hard time, but Lori arrived at his home after she had been told about his daughter. Lori didn’t understand why Andrew came with a confession of love instead of asking her for her aid, but she still tried to comfort Mary Ruadh and tried to keep her alive.
Meanwhile, Thalitha went to sleep in a drawer in Lori’s home. When she woke up, she suddenly realised she was Thomasina, and not Bast. Thomasina got out of the house, and ran home.
When Thomasina arrived at the MacDhui residence, the people inside Mary Ruadh’s room where shocked to see her alive, but it was all Mary Ruadh needed to retrieve the will to live.
Afterwards, Andrew married Lori. Mary Ruadh finally has a replacement to her mother, and carries Thomasina around less often. Also, Andrew began to believe in god, because of all the discussions he had with his friend Angus, and he realised it was God who helped him.
