The Chosen

Name of the author: Chaim Potok
Year of publication: In the USA 1966, in Penguin Books 1970

It is a novel about the Jewish community in America. It’s a fictitious book, but it could have happened. The story tells the difference between the Hasidic, the Jews who are very orthodox, and the ´normal´ Jews, who are not so strict, but surely keep the Shabbat.

The story takes place between the Second World War and the time just after the foundation of the state of Israel.

What’s the background of the Hasidic Jews? Why are they against the Jewish state in Palestine. Why doesn’t Reb Saunders talk to his son?

The main character is Reuven, because he doesn’t understand the Hasidic customs and most of the readers either. He is very good at math, but he wants to become a rabbi.
Other important characters are Danny (he is the brilliant son of a Hasidic rabbi and so he have to become a rabbi, but he should like to become a psychologist), Reb Saunders (he is a Hasidic rabbi, the father of Danny and he brings his son up by not talking to him, only when they study the Talmoed), the father of Reuven (he is very busy by promoting a state for the Jews in Palestine, because he thinks that they must not wait until the Messiah comes).

Danny and Reuven live in America in Brooklyn.

Reuven is a 15-year old boy when the story begins and a young man in the end.

It’s a very nice book to read. I know much more about the Jewish community, but if you’re not interested, it’s very boring. The part where Danny with his team is playing softball against Reuven with his team is very long-winded.

As I said before, you have to be interested in the subject. And In the beginning is the story long-winded. So I should not commend this book to everyone.

Danny hit the ball in Reuven’s eye. He visits Reuven in the hospital, so they get in contact.
But the end is also very important, because Reb Saunders there explains, why he does not talk to his son. And that he will not press Danny to become a rabbi.

I didn’t like Reb Saunders until the end, but his explanation changed everything; he had a reason.

I think that my most favourite character is the father of Reuven. He doesn’t condemn anyone. And he lives for his ideal; a state for the Jewish people.

When you like history and a book which complains the thought of a kind of people you have to read this book.

Summary:
Reuven and Danny play a baseball game against each other. It’s a fanatic play; it’s the Hasidic against the apikorsim. Danny hits the ball in Reuven’s eye and he gets glass in his eye. Danny feels sorry for Reuven and visits him in hospital. They become friends.
Danny goes to library to read 'wrong' books; Freud for example. Reuven and Danny discuss the Talmud with Reb Saunders every Shabbat.
When Reuven’s father becomes one of the great Zionists, Danny is not allowed to have contact with Reuven anymore. Reuven is very angry with Reb Saunders.
When the state of Israel is a fact, Danny is allowed to talk to Reuven again.
Danny has not told his father that he does not want to be a rabbi, but a psychologist. Reb Saunders finds out and gives Danny permission to be not a tzaddik of the Hasidic Jews, but a tzaddik of the world.
