The disappearance of Lady Carfax
One day, Lady Carfax has disappeared. Before she left, Mr Schlessinger visited her. He is a holy man for Lady Carfax. Watson goes to the place where she has been seen last. He discovers that a man, called Mr Green, is following her. Marie, Lady Carfaxs’ maid, says he is a bad man. Watson sees this man walking outside, and he goes to the man and asks his name. But the man refuses to answer. Than asks Watson what happened to Lady Carfax. Suddenly, the man attacks Watson. Holmes, dressed like a Frenchman, helps him. Sherlock takes Watson inside a little hotel, where they meet Mr. Green again. But he wants to help Sherlock and Watson, because he loves Lady Carfax. Mr Green follows Miss Schlessinger, and he sees that she goes into an undertaker’s. Mr Green follows her, and he hears her talking to the undertaker. He says: It took longer than an ordinary one would take.” But than the undertaker and Miss Schlessinger look at Mr Green, so he goes outside and hides in a doorway of another shop. Miss Schlessinger calls a cab, and he follows her in another cab. She goes out at 36 Poultney Square, and he sees that some man carry in a coffin. A few hours later they go to the house of Mr and Miss Schlessinger. They search in the house, but without a search warrant. Miss Schlessinger runs out to get a policeman. Holmes, Green and Watson find a big coffin, but there’s only a little old woman inside. When the policeman arrives, they have to leave. Next morning they go again, this time with a search warrant. When they look in the big coffin, there are two body’s in the coffin. There is another body on the body of the dead old woman. It is the body of Lady Frances, wrapped in bandages, which were still wet with the chloroform. After half an hour her breath returns. But Mr and Miss Schlessinger have already escaped.
