Title of the book: About a boy
Author: Nick Hornby
Niveau: 4 Intermediate (1700 words)
Number of pages: 70
Reading time: +- 1,5 hours
Meaning of the title: The story goes about a special boy who changes the life of a man.
Personal opinion: I expected the story would be different. But I liked it, because there are happening a lot of things at the same time. That’s why it’s a fascinating story.

Summary:
The story takes place in London, where Marcus and his mother Fiona live, since a few weeks.
Marcus doesn’t like school because the other children bully him. They do that because he wears weird clothes, and acts weird.
Fiona wants Marcus to have a good time and sends him to her friend. Her friend is a single mother too and takes her child and Marcus to a meeting of SPAT (Single Parents – Alone Together). Will is also at the meeting, and he meets Marcus.
When Fiona’s friend, Will and Marcus are in Marcus’ living room they see Fiona lying on the sofa. She was trying to commit suicide.
Later that week Marcus follows Will to his home and finds out he hasn’t got a child. He pretended he had one, so he could meet single women at SPAT.
Marcus often goes to Will’s after school and he learns him to act like a single parent. Will learns Marcus how to act like a normal child, so his classmates won’t bully him anymore.
At school Marcus meets Ellie. She is a big fan of Kurt Cobain. They become friends.
Fiona doesn’t want Marcus to see Will again. She thinks it’s not good for him. Marcus doesn’t listen and keeps spending time with Will.
Fiona is feeling better now Marcus’ classmates don’t bully him anymore.
Marcus’ father Clive broke his leg, and now he wants Marcus to come to Cambrigde to see him. Marcus doesn’t want to go, because only when bad things happen, his father wants him to come. Will says Marcus should go to his father, and talk about it. Marcus is going, but not alone. He takes Ellie with him.
In the train Marcus finds out that Kurt Cobain, Ellie’s idol, is dead. He doesn’t want Ellie to know, but she already does. She has a bottle of vodka in her bag and drinks it. When police men see she’s drunk, they take her and Marcus to the police station. The police men call their parents. Fiona calls Will and asks if he comes with her, because Will has been like a father to Marcus.
When they get at the police station they can take their children home. But is Marcus going back to his mother or his father? He goes to his father for a few weeks.
When is comes back home Will visits him. And everything is going to be alright.
