Title: In the lake of the woods
Author: Tim O’Brien
Number of pages: 306 pages
Number of chapters: 30 chapters
Publisher: time and date of publication: The publisher is Flamingo original and it was published in 1994
Kind of text: It‘s a fiction story, because the writer made it up. Even tough it could really happen.
Explanation of title: In the lake of the woods is the name of the place where John and Kathy have their cottage
Fiction: It’s a he, she, it point of view. There are also a lot of different points of view in this book
Description of the main characters:
John Wade: He is an political leader, until his true stories about what he did in the Vietnam war came out. His party had great failures. He and his love Kathy went to their cottage to cool down. But John has extreme trouble with dealing with his past, for example the way his father treaded him despite how much John loved him.
Kathy Wade: She has known John since she was a freshman. And wrote him letters when he was in the war. But she find it strange the way he acts some times. She doesn’t know how to handle that. Even tough she loves him unconditionally. She hates the fact that he is in politics and wishes that he has got more time for her. When his party loses he promises to quit politics and that makes Kathy very happy.
Description of main theme: The main theme is about John life, about him being bullied by his dad, about him in the war and about him doing magical tricks. But then Kathy disappears and John is the main suspect, so then the main theme changes a bit because it's a bit more about her disappearance.
My own opinion: I found the book very exciting, because you didn’t know what to expect. And the ending is very cool. I love the fact that it’s open and that the writer has given a lot of possibilities from what might have happened.
Beginning: In the beginning John and Kathy are at their cottage, talking about their future.
Ending: There isn’t really an ending. The writer gives several ending that could have happened. You just have to make up your own ending
Summary
Kathy and John are happy in their cottage in the place in lake of the woods. But then there are flashbacks to John’s life. About his miserable childhood, because his father was an alcohol addict and he kept calling him names because he father thought that he was fat. But in his youth he found one thing he did like. Practicing magic tricks. He felt special when he did that. John was very upset when his father died, he talked to him as if he was still there. When John went to college he met Kathy. He fell in love with her. But he always wanted to know what she was up to. So he followed her. Then the Vietnam war began and John has to go to Vietnam to fight there. The other soldiers called him sorcerer, witch he liked because it really meant something to him. Charlie Company (the company where John fights for in the war) was involved with a lot of useless murder. John even shot one of his own mates when he was in Vietnam. He was under fire and suddenly the guy showed up, so he shot him, without even looking who he was. He didn’t say a word to the other soldiers and later on he hid what happened. He was The sorcerer so he thought he could get away with everything, even murder. During his stay in Vietnam he wrote Kathy letters. Kathy got scared of the letters sometimes, but mostly the letters were about simple, funny things. When John came back form the war, he married Kathy. And he also went into politics. First John became lieutenant of Minnesota, but when he ran for US senator, his party failed. Then Kathy and John go to their cottage, because they wanted to escape everything in the world. Then in the middle of the night, John decides to make tea. But he pours the boiling water over household plants. And he keeps on saying: “Kill Jesus” The next morning Kathy is gone and the boat was also missing. The whole day long John thinks she will come back, but when she isn’t back at night, he gets very scared. He runs to his neighbours house and they call the police. They want to hold a search. Then John wants to search her as well because the police didn’t find anything. With a boat he borrowed from Claude he was going to find her. That’s what he thought. Claude was the last to talk to John trough the radio in his boat. The ending is open, there are several suggestions:
- Kathy drowned in the lake
- She went the wrong way with the boat and got lost
- John had poured hot water over her face and thrown
her in the water and sank the boat
- Or it could be John’s great disappearing trick, and he
followed Kathy afterwards.
Genre: A detective
Style: It is written very exciting. You just want to keep on reading. It isn’t very fun that you have to guess the ending. I always like to know what happened. But it is an original ending because the writer gives several suggestions
