Summary:
''Yayan might get unladylike ideas at such a school'' protested Mother. Father glanced at me, and there was both pride and a touch of despair in his eyes. ''I think making Yanyan into a well-bred young lady is a hopeless cause, anyway. I like this passage, because it is one of the most important things in the book. The story is about Yanyan who lives in China in 1920. She wants to be a doctor. Normally Chinese girls find a husband and get married after they have finished school. Her mother doesn't like it at all that she wants to become a doctor, she thinks that she won't get married, because chinese man don't want a working wife. Het father thinks contrary. He's a doctor too. He thinks that things are changing and that they have to change too.

An incident happened on an evening when Yanyan and her parents sat in the garden. They heard people shouting an after a while they heard some gun shots. Father got worried and they all went inside. There were more gunshots and they were much closer as the firts one. Father told the gatekeeper to close the front gate and not let anyone in. They thaught that it was a group of soldiers that were arresting somebody. After a while the voices and the footsteps died away.

Later that night one of the maids went to Yanyan and told her: ''somebody wants to see you''. Yanyan followed the maid and when they came outside there lay something on the ground. It was Liang Baoshu, a friend of Eldest brother. He was bleeding from one shoulder. One of the bullets had hit him in the shoulder. He said: ''You want to be a doctor. This may be your chance to practise''. Yanyan looked at it and she decided to help him. She took a kitchen knife and she poured some liquor over the knife. Then she tried to get the bullet out of his shoulder. Boashu fainted and Yanyan got the bullet out of his shoulder. Then she had to hide him for her father.

Opinion:
I think I would have done it the exactly same way. When you see a boy like this, bleeding and if he has so much pain. Of course you will help him. And if you want to become a doctor, you can try it if you really want it. And you can try if you are scared for the blood.
