1. Look at the cover-design. Can you describe it briefly?
(I thought more simplistic than this is impossible).
2. Do you like the cover-design? Why (not)?
Yes I like it because it is exciting, I like books with a lot of action, and it’s on the cover. So it can’t be better in mine opinion. After you’ve read the book you know it gives a good reflection of the reality that is been described in the book.
3. What does it make you think the story might be about? Just make a guess!
About a man who’s a very good murderer, but for some reason he changed into a victim.
4. What is the title?
The Bourne Identity
5. Does the title reveal something that the story may be about? What does it make you think of?
Yes, the title and the cover make me think of a murderer. Who’s identity is unknown. But for some reason his identity will be known.
6. Who is the writer?
Robert Ludlum
7. Does the back cover tell you something about him or is there some information on one of the first pages of the book? Write the main things down.
It’s about Jason Bourne, who is he? And why does he have four million dollars in a Swiss bank account? He has lost his memory, and starts with one clue: somebody wants him dead. The more he discovers, the terrifying his quest becomes.
8. Now look in the book, how many pages has it got?
540 pages
9. How is the book built up? Are there chapters, are there parts? How many?
There are 35 chapters and at the end there’s an epilogue.
10. Can you tell why you have chosen this book?
I like action and thrillers. When I saw the cover I supposed there would be a lot of action. Then I read the back, and began to be curious. And when that is happening it’s a very good sign. I also saw it was a thriller. Matt Damon at the front is also a very good sign.
Another reason why I have chosen this book, is because of a friend of mine, she told me a few months ago that she saw a film on television. It was called the Bourne Identity. She was so enthusiastic… I kept it in my memory and the decision to switch my book from Danielle Steel to this one was very easy!
B The beginning of the story
1. Write down the first sentence of the book.
The trawler plunged into the angry swells of the dark, furious sea like an awkward animal trying desperately to break out of an impenetrable swamp.
2. Does the first page tell you something about the setting? What?
It’s on a boat, on the sea. In a time of guns.
3. How many characters do you meet on this page? Mention them.
Only one unknown man. And some people who shoot on him.
4. Can you see who the narrator of this page is?
No, it’s just somebody who describes a situation.
5. What can you say about the style: simple words or difficult ones, long sentences or short ones, easy reading or complicated?
It is not very easy to read, but it’s exciting to read. The sentences are quite long. The writer uses a lot of words to describe a situation. The words are not very simple but also not too difficult.
6. Summarize the information of page one.
The sea is very wild, the whether is as bad as you can imagine. A man has been shot four times in his back. The waves lifted the wounded man off his feet, sweeping him in the doorway back into the cabin. A fifth gunshot fired wildly.
C The Plot:
Tell the plot of the book in 20-30 lines. It is no problem if you need more space, but do not overdo it!
The weather is very bad, people on a fishing boat (62 miles from Marseille) see a man lying in the water. They pick him out the water and found out that he’s unconscious and that he’s got bullet-wound. One of the fishing man removes the bullets from his back. But finds another thing: a Swiss Bank number in his hip. When the man is conscious he can’t remember anything. But he can speak; English, French, Dutch, German and he finds out he’s a very good fighter! He’s got an instinct, when he’s entering a room the first thing he does is looking for the exits. He knows the best places to look for a gun and how many people there are in the room. When the ship docks he went to the bank in Switzerland. He finds out that his name is Jason Bourne and that he has got 6 passports. But he also finds out that he is John Michael Kane. In his safe lies also 4 million Dollars and two guns.
CIA Langley Virginia, Mission failed. They are looking at an interview with Nykwama Wambosi. Troublesome before he got the power. A problem when he’s got the power and a disaster since he has been banished. He is writing a book about the CIA systems in Africa, he’s going to name names. In the interview he tells that he survived an outrage and that he’s got prove that the CIA is beyond that.
Meanwhile the Swiss bank has informed the CIA that Bourne is still alive. The hunt is opened! Jason finds out that he’s got an apartment in Paris. At that place he became attacked. He discovers more and more. Slowly but surely he finds out that he has failed. He had to kill Nykwama Wambosi, in order of Tread stone now it has been done by somebody else. He succeed in discovering a secret location of Tread stone and that’s the end of Tread stone. He heard the information why he had to kill Wambosi and slowly his memory came back. He couldn’t kill him because he got compassion by seeing his children.
The CIA now started a new communication system for defence: Black Briar.
Jason is no longer an undercover CIA agent.
End of the story.
D Questions on the whole book:
1. Could you find a name for the type of novel you have read? For example a war-novel, an adventure-novel or a detective novel.
Thriller
2. Is there an initial incident, an event that makes the story start? What is it according to you?
Yes there is; a man is being shot four times in his back on a boat and falls into the water.
3. What is the climax of the story in your eyes? Does the climax have influence on the course of the story?
In what way?
Well, actually I can’t say there was a real climax. The story is so complicated, there happened too many things. It’s exciting the whole time, maybe if I really have to tell you a climax I think of the moment he gets his memory back then you finally understand the whole story.
That’s at the end. If he discovers the secret location of Tread stone. Because it is quite complicated with the CIA and stuff like that. He always had to run, had to disappear. But you don’t exactly know why. At the end every little piece lands on his place. Then you are going to think thamn.. It’s over, this is the end.
4. Have you been able to find out why the book has this title? Explain it?
Yes, the title is very easy. The story is all about a man witch identity is unknown. He wants to discover who he is, he is Jason Bourne. So the whole story is about the identity of Jason Bourne. In short: the Bourne Identity.
5. Mention the main character(s). Tell something about him/her/them. How do you think about him/her/them?
Jason Bourne is a kind man, who always has to hide but he don’t know why because he lost his memory. He is very clever, speaks a lot of languages, is a good fighter and sees everything. He’s got a few instincts witch normal people don’t have.
Marie is a girl who’s got a problem: she has no money. She rides Jason to Paris where his apartment is, for 2000 Dollars. But when they finally are in Paris she kept on travelling with him. She talks a lot when she’s nervous and begins to like Jason more and more. When she is scared she drinks it away.
6. Give a complete picture of the setting: time, place, social background.
It takes place in Europe at this time. Mostly in French and Switzerland. It’s about undercover agents. Each agent has got a country. So Jason was Paris. Those agents’ works for the government in the USA, they don’t exist. They have to protect the nation by killing particular people.
7. What is the theme of the book according to you? Motivate your answer.
CIA protecting system, it’s about a man who works for the CIA but he can’t remember it any more. It’s all about the system, that’s why he had to kill and why he had to be killed.
8. Who is the narrator of the story, or in other words, from whose point of view do we see and experience things? From somebody who sees the situation, you don’t know what’s in the mind of the people, you hear what they tell but you don’t know what they think.
9. How does the writer use time? Chronologically? Are there, for example, flashbacks? If there are flashbacks, can you tell why the writer uses them?
Most of the time it is chronologically only at the end Jason flashes back at the time he had to kill Wambosi. The writer uses that flashback to explain why he lost his memory.
10. Did you like the writer’s style? Say why (not).
Yes I like it so much that I want to read the book again. It is so complicated that even if it was written in Dutch I still think it would be a difficult book to read. Not because of the words the writer uses but the plot. I know very little about thinks like the CIA and the FBI. The writer kept the clue till the end, so I couldn’t put the book away. The writer is very good! The words he uses are beautiful; he can describe a situation clearly. So you see the whole story happening in your head. First I thought that 500 pages would be far too long, but that’s absolutely not true!
11. How did you like the book as a whole? Write something about the reasons why you liked or disliked the book. (5 – 10 lines)
I like it because of the excitement that was built up. From the beginning the writer pulls you into the story. He describes situation so great that you can form a really good image inside your head. The only dark side of the book is if you have to write the plot. I first made a plot from 4 pages. So that had to be so much shorter that I’m very sorry for that. The book is complicating but that makes it more interesting.
12. Was there a particular event or passage in the book that really appealed to you? Describe it and say why it struck or moved you like that.
Ohw There are so many situations that really appealed to me, if it is about the fighting part, the hiding part of the kissing scene. I liked it all, there wasn’t a particular situation that really appealed to me it was just the whole book. I’ve been reading until the middle of the night. But to describe a situation I shall pick the one that Jason had to drive in the Mini-Cooper. He had to drive in a car and all the police cars and motor-cyclists where after him. At the end no police car and motor-cyclist were left. He drove the Mini into the parking garage and removes the finger prints. It was an incredible deed. (Of course the whole situation was far more longer than I described now but this was the main aim).
