I was looking for English reviews of this book, but all the short reviews I’d found existed out of a few phrases written by a magazine or a newspaper. This is why I’d chosen for this Dutch review to use for my bookreport [in fact, our assignment wasn’t clear on this point, whether it should be dutch or english] :

Goed en kwaad

French' zeer succesrijke debuut, Het geheugenspel, is een spannend en met goed getekende personages bevolkt boek, waarin je als lezer eerst tot je afgrijzen de weg van de zogeheten 'hervonden herinneringen' op werd geleid. Maar verrassing, aan het slot bleek het boek zonder drammerigheid een ontmaskering van deze mythe, geschapen door het misschien zelfs wel goed bedoelende, maar ondeskundige en manipulerende therapeuten.
Een maatschappelijk relevante thriller mag je gerust stellen waarin een vrouw haar mondigheid herwint door in te gaan tegen het traumatiserende verleden dat haar therapeut haar aanpraat. Het veilige huis is wat gewoner van opzet [1] .
Het veilige huis is een goede thriller [2] , zij het geenszins een uitzonderlijke [3] . De dubbele ontknoping is minder verrassend [4] dan die van Het geheugenspel en ook heeft French één niet heel plausibel [5] toeval nodig om Sam op het juiste spoor te zetten, maar toch anders dan je in een doorsnee thriller verwacht. Over Verlies en rouw, en hoe je je daar ook als deskundige nog lelijk op kunt verkijken, staan in dit boek een paar treffende passages [6] , en ook de dialogen zijn vaak erg goed [7] , zoals deze, aan het slot: 'Ben jij heel erg oud, mammie?' 'Nee, gewoon volwassen, niet oud.' 'Dus je gaat niet gauw dood?' 'Nee, ik blijf nog lang leven.' 'Als ik zo oud ben als jij, ben jij dan al dood?' 'Misschien heb je dan wel al kinderen en ben ik oma.' 'Kunnen wij altijd bij elkaar blijven wonen, mammie?' 'Zo lang als jij dat wil.' 'Mag ik nou een video zien?' 'Ja.'

4. Reactie op het commentaar

1. The safe house is being compared with French’ book The memory game. I haven’t read this book so I can’t give comment.
2. I agree. I think it’s good, because, based on the passages, dialogues and the measure of tension I personally felt, I really liked it and I compared it with other thrillers I’ve read.
3. I disagree. To me this was an exceptional thriller, because of the fact that the end was open. You know the murderer as a person who pretends to be someone else, but you’re not aware of it’s true identity, because this remains uknown. I’ve never read a book with a plot that ends this way. Even the last page of the book emphasizes this; “or perhaps she’s gone forever.”
4. Again this is a comparison with The memory game. I haven’t read this book so I can’t give comment. All I can say that to me this form of double outcome is surprising; I’ve never read thrillers in which this form is used. The second outcome in The safe house was unexpected because it became clear almost at the end of the book. Then I expected it to end with the first outcome.
5. No, I don’t think it’s plausible. Actually it isn’t plausible at all. When you’ve lost two person that are killed by someone, you automatically start thinking a lot about it. Sam Laschen was a very clear, rational woman. The coincidence was simple, but Sam’s thoughts made it more complicated and plausible. Page: 299 to 304 is a conversation with detective Angelolou in which she tells him everything she’s been thinking about after she found Danny’s bird in the boathouse.
6. I agree. The passages feel very alive when you read them. For example; page: 338 to 340 is a discription of her final goodbye of Danny. You feel the passion and the emotion, because of the detailed discription of the place, her feelings and the things she does at the moment. Because of this you can imagine everything very detailed and that makes you feel what the character feels.
7. I agree. Every dialogue is very detailed in a way Sam feels at the moment. She describes the person she’s talking with; the looks and the attitude. And you know how she thinks and feels which makes the dialogues very alive. Page 52 and 53clear this up; it begins sharp with the word: “No.”, “Dr. Laschen.” You feel her anger. It’s followed by a detailed decsription of the persons in the room and what they are doing and where they are. Later the reader finds out how Sam’s feeling at that moment.
