In this book Joey, his wife Peggy and her son Richard go to the farm where Joey grew up.
The father of Joey is dead and Joey hasn’t got any brothers or sisters so his mom: Mrs. Robinson lives alone with her dogs. Mrs. Robinson suffers from angina and emphysema
Joey hasn’t been at the farm for a long time. The last time he was there was with his first wife and their daughter. So this is the first time for Peggy and she is pretty nervous to meet Joey’s mom and afraid that Mrs. Robinson won’t accept her and her son. When they arrive Joey’s mom is already waiting for them outside. And once in the house they talk about the history of the farm. Which has been in the hands of the family for quit some time but Joey’s grandfather had selled it and Joey’s mom bought it back so that there had been a gap between it. The farm is still filled with pictures of Joey. Something witch makes him think that this house is just to full of him.
Joey already predicted that Peggy and Mrs. Robinson probably wouldn’t be able to get along with each other because his first wife: Joan had the same problem. After just one day he sees he was right because his mom says that Richard is such a bright boy even though his mom isn’t bright at all.
Joey, Peggy and Richard stay at the farm for a while and Richard and Mrs. Robinson get along quite well in contrast to Mrs. Robinson and Peggy.
But after Joey talks to his mom she becomes a lot softer so that Peggy and she get along a little better.
Joey is very happy with his new wife and her son but Joey sees that his mom becomes weaker and weaker and doctor Graaf has to pay visits at the farm now and then.
Joey’s doesn’t wants the farm to be selled as long as she is alive but it’s about time for Peggy, Richard and him to leave. Joey is afraid that his mom isn’t able to look after her self anymore. And he suggests that Richard and Peggy go home while he stays there for a while.
But Mrs. Robinson doesn’t wants to hear it and says that she’ll be all right with the regular visits of Dr. Graaf. At the end of the book Joey’s mom shows some affection towards Peggy when she says that she want’s Peggy to have her picture taken the next time she comes and she is still alive because Peggy has such a great smile. And she asks Joey to sell her farm for a good price when she is dead.
This is probably her last wish.
