TITLE : THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP
AUTHUR : CHARLES DICKENS
PUBLISHER : BROWNS BOOKS LTD.

SUMMARY

The old curiosity shop starts with a man, who walked slowly down the street by night. There he met a pretty little girl and he then begun talking to her. She was apprehensive, because she was lost. He said that he would take her home. When they arrived at her house after knocking the door, an old man with grey hair opened the door. The old man seemed to be the grandfather of the girl who is Nelly, because he kissed her. The old man insisted that the man enters. The house was very starnge: you could see all kinds of old and curious things. It was a pawn shop( a second hand shop). The old man was very elated to see Nelly again and therefore he thanked the man for bringing Nelly back home. While they were talking a funny-faced boy opened the door, his name is Kit, he's the servant. Kit left the house just before midnight again, because he had to work early the next morning. When Kit left, Nelly was busy cleaning the table, the old man then thanked the man again. The old man and the man left simultaneously. When the man saw the old man leave he was totally flabbergasted because he thaught that it was strange to leave a young girl alone at night. The old man said that he would be home early in the morning. The two men then left the house and walked on a while together. the old man suddenly stopped. He said that their ways were widely different and he promptly went.

Nearly a week later the man returned to the pawn shop. The old man and another individual were in the back of the shop and there seemed to be a disagreement between them. The other person (Fred) is the old man's grandson and Nelly's brother. He was very angry because he wanted to see Nelly and he was not permitted to. The old man called freds' (Dick Sweiveller) friend that was waiting outside.

The old man and Fred were still opposing. The neighbour (Daniel Quilp) then brought Nelly in. Fred asked Nelly if she hated him, but her response was unhesitatingly positive. Thereafter Fred told the old man that he would like to see his sister as often as he wanted. Daniel Quilp is a very unpleasant-looking dwarf and is peremptory over his wife and mother. His wife is very obedient to him> Kit is Mrs. Quilps'son and is very timorous of Daniel. Kit took good care of Daniel's mother and is a faithful servant.

Fred believd that the old man was very rich and had a good plan. He asked his friend Dick Swiveller to marry Nelly. Using marraige as manner to get money out of the old man. DIck was not really sure about the marraige because she was only fourteen years old. Fred then said that he could marry her in four or five years, but Dick still had a negative answer about marraige with Nelly.

Fred had the wrong conception of the old man because the old man wasn't even as rich as Fred had thought. He hoped to win a fortune for Nelly and so he had begun gambling. In this unfortunate situation the grandfather borrowed money from Daniel Quilp until he ran into such a deep debt.

One night the od man said that he wouldn't leave home, because he had been weak and ill all day long. The old man then told Nelly that he was afraid that he had ruined her life and that he was afraid that they would be beggars. Although Nelly was optimistic about that; she said that they should leave this sad place and that they could beg their way through, through begging from door to door. Suddenly Daniel Quilp came in and excused the old man from Nelly so that he could talk to the old man privately, when Nelly left the room Daniel told the old man that he knew about his secret nightlife, he said that he knew that the old man was gamblig every night to try and make a fortune for Nelly. The old man then wanted to know who had told him all of this information. It was Kit, he played the spyand Quilp had tampered with him.

Nelly then wet to Kit and his mother. She told him that the old man was very weak and ill. She also said that Kit shouldn't come over anymore. The next morning the old man was in a raging fever. The house was also no longer theirs, because Quilp had taken possesion of the shop.

He did this with the help of a disruptable lawyer, calleed Simpson Brass. Quilp sold the stuff in the house and Nelly and her grandfather had to leave the naext day. The next morning they left London secretly. Quilp noticed that they had gone. but he thought that they would soon return. They wandered throught the countryside all day and they met two men riding on horses. The first one was called Tommy Codlin, and the other was a little man, whose real name was Harris, but he went by the name of "short" or "trotters". The two men were the owners of a punch and Judy shop. After a while they noticed that the old man and Nelly had secretly escaped from London, so Nelly decided that they leave as soon as possible. Late in the day they fled. They made a path throught lots of people they never stopped once to look back.

Meanwhile their former servant Kit is worried about the disappearance of Nelly. His mother was alos worried. Kit had met Mr. and Mrs. Garland. They made a deal: Kit would be their servant instead of Quilps' servant. Kit would then earn six pounds annually. After they had made the deal the old lady instructed the little servant girl (Barbara) to take Kit throught the house and to give him something to eat and drink.

Nelly and her grandfather were safe but they were very exhausted. After a long way the finally saw a house. There was an old man in the little garden infront of his cottage. he was a schoolmaster, because he had written 'School' up above his window. He was pale, and a simple-looking man. Nelly and her grandfather could go and eat with him. They could also sleep the night. The next morning they thanked the schoolmaster and carried on with their journey. On the road they arrived by a caravan. Mrs. Jarley was engaged to Goerge and they lived together in the caravan. Nelly explained that they were travelling to the next town on the road. The lady then said that the next town waseight miles on, so she invited Nelly and her grandfather to travel with them. They also worked a few days for Mrs. Jarley who ran an exhebition of wax works. One evening Nelly and the old man were going for a walk, they came across a public house where some men were playing cards, he also wanted to play. So the passion of the game had revived, but after a few games he had lost all of his money so they left. They had to flee againto escape from Mrs. Jarelyand they found a quiet country village.

Meanwhile friends and enemies were trying to find them, Quilp was looking for them because he wanted his money that he lent the old man.Kit was worried and him and his mother were concerned and were also looking for them. Quilp thought of a plan to acuse Kit. He had plotted a plan with Simpson Brass and his sister Sally. They wanted to have Kit flasely acussed of stealing a five-pound note. Kit was tried and found guilty. However the plot was discovered by Dick Swiveller. Quilp heard this and tried to ecsape arrest, but he was drowned.

At last Nelly and her grandfather were found in the village. Kit and Mrs.Gerland hurried to the village but they arrived too late. Weakend by her suffering, Nelly passed away, and her grandfather also deceased shortly after.

OWN OPINION

Well i found the book a bit of a sad book because it was just abouta girl that ahsn't really got a future and how her life is deteriorating infront of her very own eyes, and also to take care of her grandfather which seems to be so down that he's not prepared to do anything to help anyone and neither himself. Nelly is one character that maybe very destrutive and/ or lost in the manner that her childhood was broken and that takes so mcuh healing that it's almost impossible to be healed and especially when you have a grnadfather that goes out gambling at night and that leaves you at home like that in the night.
