Summary
The story starts to tell us something about Emma Woodhouse, the main-character of the story. She is a rich, pretty, higher-class girl and she is almost 21 years old (when the story starts). What I also need to tell is that Emma is a SNOB. (~ She looks down on people who are from a lower class.) Emma lives with her daddy at Hartfield, in their country mansion near Highbury and here she leads quite a protected life. Her father is self-indulgent and in poor health, so he leaves his big company to his daughter. Emma has also got a sister, her name is Isabella but she has already been married to John Knightley and she has five children. This couple lives in London. Emma's mother has died when Emma was still very young, so Emma can't remember her. Fortunately had her place been supplied by an excellent woman as governess, named Miss Taylor.
Miss Taylor had been a governess for family Woodhouse for 16 years, but she left now, because she got married to Mr. Weston (his second marriage). Mr. Weston lives in Highbury. Emma doesn't like this, because she loses a very good friend (a little bit a "mother"). Mr. Woodhouse (Emma's father) also doesn't like this change and he keeps on saying poor Miss Taylor, although she is perfectly happy! Emma likes to think that she is the one who has brought Miss Taylor and Mr. Weston together. George Knightley (I call him Mr. Knightley now!) - a very good and close friend of the family Woodhouse (brother of John) - knows Emma well enough to see that she likes to fantasize, Mr. Knightley is 38 years old.
Emma is left alone now with her father at Hartfield and she feels very isolated because of this.
She becomes a friend with Harriet Smith. Harriet is 17 years old and she has unknown parents. Emma thinks Harriet comes from a very good family, but that's off course not sure! Emma isn't being Harriet's friend because she likes her so much, but by improving Harriet she has something to fill up her lonely moments. Harriet also likes to spend time with the Martins, a farmer-family. Harriet especially likes Robert Martin, he is 24 years old. But Emma decides that Harriet can't see them anymore, because the Martins are lower-class people. The Martins also know Mr. Knightley, because they rent a large farm from him. To let Harriet forget Mr. Martin she fixes Harriet's attention to Mr. Elton, who's in Emma's eyes a real gentleman and he seems to like Harriet a lot. And Emma is also more and more convinced that Mr. Elton is in love with Harriet. In the mean while Emma herself is very curious about Frank Churchill, Mr. Weston's son and Emma would like to meet him once. Frank Churchill lives at the moment with his aunt Miss Churchill, whose surname he has adopted.
A few days later Mr. Martin asks Harriet to marry him. Harriet would love to marry him, but Emma convinces her that he is not worthy her. When Emma tells Mr. Knightley that (fortunately!) Harriet has refused the offer of marriage, Mr. Knightley is very angry on Emma. Because he immediately knows that this was Emma's work and he thinks she is a fool to say that Mr. Martin is not worth Harriet.
There is a dinner at Randals, a couple of weeks later (in December). Harriet has a fever so she can't come. During this party Emma starts to think that Mr. Elton may love her instead of Harriet. On the way back after the party it becomes (finally) clear that Emma had been right about the feelings of Mr. Elton. He asks her to marry him when they sit in a carriage alone. Emma refuses him quite angry. She is very sad for Harriet who will be very disappointed now because of Emma: she was the one who talked her in loving this man.
Then Mr. Elton sends Mr. Woodhouse a letter in which he tells him that he is going on a journey to Bath for several weeks. After this Emma goes to see Harriet who is still recovering from her fever to tell her what happened. Harriet is very disappointed now and she cries a great deal, in spite of this she is not angry with Emma.
After a while Emma and Harriet go visit Mrs. and Miss Bates who live in Highbury. Miss Bates tells them that her niece Jane Fairfax (~ Mrs. Bates granddaughter) didn't feel very well and that she is coming to stay with them very soon for a while. Jane turns out to be a beautiful, clever and well-behaved young woman. Jane is also a very good piano-player. Emma is actually a little bit jealous on her. Jane Fairfax has also got a past… when Jane became an orphan she was adopted by a general who brought her up together with his own daughter, who is now married to Mr. Dixon. When Emma talks to Miss Bates she gets the idea that there is a secret affair between Jane and Mr. Dixon. Emma discovers after a while that this appears to be a mistaken idea.
Later in the story it appears to be that Mr. Elton is married now with a certain Miss Hawkins. Everyone is talking about this event and this hurts Harriet very much. Therefor Emma decides to let her visit the Martins. After this visit Harriet is very confused; she still likes the Martins.
Then Mr. Weston brings the happy news that his son Frank (Churchill) will be in Highbury in a day. When Emma meets him she likes this man a lot. Frank is just like she had expected, he is very gentle, clever and extremely friendly. When Emma walks with Mrs. Weston (~ Miss Taylor) in the garden, Frank remarks at the same moment that Jane Fairfax plays the piano very beautifully. One evening there is a party at the Coles, they have been neighbours of the Woodhouses for several years. At the party Emma hears that Jane has received a piano from an admirer. At the party Mrs. Weston tells Emma that she thinks that Jane and Mr. Knightley would make a great couple, but Emma thinks that's ridiculous. Everybody was quite enthusiastic about this party at the Coles. This especially because the people at the party were able to dance. After this Frank would like to give a party (too) at Randals where people also could dance, but unfortunately there is not enough space (in there). Therefor they think of the "Crown", an inn in Highbury, which is spacious enough. But just before the dance can be held, Frank is called back to his aunt, because this woman is very ill. Frank is very sorry to leave and so is Emma. Frank doesn't leave at once actually. At his last visit to Hartfield, he is about to say something very important to Emma, but unfortunately just at that moment Mr. Weston and Mr. Woodhouse enter so that Emma doesn't know what it is Frank wanted to tell her. Emma is convinced that he wanted to say that he is in love with her, but she doesn't know for sure if she really loves him. After a couple of weeks she knows that she will refuse him if he would ask her to marry him. But suddenly the idea comes into her mind that Frank and Harriet would make a great couple.
Emma decides (after several days) that when Mr. Elton and Mrs. Elton are in Highbury again, it is for the best that she and Harriet pay a visit to Mrs. Elton as soon as possible. Emma doesn't like Mrs. Elton (…on the contrary (!) she thinks Mrs. Elton is a real bitch), but Harriet is really impressed by her. Also during other meetings Emma thinks of Mrs. Elton that she is a real ill mannered person. Mrs. Elton notices this and therefor she treats Emma unkindly.
In the mean while Mrs. Weston is still convinced that Jane and Mr. Knightley love each other. Emma asks Mr. Knightley about this (because Emma is quite curious!) and he says to have no intentions of marrying Jane at all!
Mrs. Elton thinks that Jane is a perfect young lady and they meet a lot (the two rivals of Emma!). Mrs. Elton is trying to find a place as a governess for Jane. Jane doesn't seem to be so keen about this plan, something is keeping her at Highbury…
Then there's a picnic. During this picnic Emma flirts with Frank Churchill. Then they play (during the picnic!) a game, during this game Emma is very rude to Miss Bates (Emma's snobistic behaviour!). After the picnic Mr. Knightley rebukes Emma, then Emma feels sorry for her bad behaviour.
A couple of days later Harriet tells Emma that she is in love with someone, but unfortunately she will not be able to marry that person, because he is of a class above her. Emma thinks now that Harriet is referring to Frank Churchill and she is very happy about this.
But then (finally!) one morning Frank tells Mr. and Mrs. Weston that he is going to marry Jane Fairfax. It seemed to be so that this has already been going on for quite a while without anyone knowing about it. Emma is very angry on Frank for keeping this secret so long! Nevertheless Emma is most sorry for Harriet who is - as Emma believes - still in love with Frank. When Harriet hears this news she is very surprised, but not sad - like Emma had expected - and Emma doesn't (off course!) understand this. Then Harriet tells Emma that she in not in love with Frank, but with Mr. Knightley. She says to have good reasons to believe that he loves her too; a few days ago she had a deep conversation with Mr. Knightley and Harriet liked this conversation! Emma is shocked by this news and now she starts to realise that she loves Mr. Knightley too… Luckily he is also in love with Emma; he has always thought that Emma loved Frank and he was very jealous about this, but now he hears that this isn't the case… he asks her to marry him! They decide for the sake of Mr. Woodhouse that they both will come to live at Hartfield.
At the same time Harriet stays in London with Isabella Woodhouse and John Knightley to go to the dentist. Emma still hasn't told Harriet about her and Mr. (George!) Knightley. Then there comes a big surprise. Mr. Knightley brings Emma the news that Mr. Martin has again asked Harriet to marry him and that she has accepted this. Harriet also turns out to be the illegitimate daughter of a tradesman and so, again Emma's romantic fantasies are blown up.
Emma is extremely surprised, but also very happy that everything ends so well. Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill get married and Harriet Smith and Robert Martin get married.
Mr. Woodhouse still isn't very keen on Emma's marriage, but finally they can fix a date. Mrs. Elton thinks their wedding isn't fancy enough, but Emma Woodhouse is happy…
