Summary
At a sunny midday, Pop, Ma, Mariette and the other sons and daughters of Pop and Ma, are driving home. As soon as they get home, they spot a man holding a yellowish paper, Mr. Charlton. Mr. Charlton is from the tax office. Mariette falls instantly in love with him. Pop and Ma notice this and try to keep Mr. Charlton at their house for the weekend. They succeed. That evening, they try to teach Mr. Charlton how to play crib and get him drunk. The next day, Mr. Charlton is very tired and wants to sleep the entire day. Instead of sleeping, he has to go and feed the donkeys with Mariette. That same day, the Brigadier comes to see Pop. He wants to use his few acres of land to make a parking lot out of it. Pop doesn’t want this and offers the Brigadier to sell 1 acre of land to make a parking lot out of it.

The next day, Mr. Charlton and the Larkin’s go out to the strawberry-picking field, called the ‘strawberry lark’ by Pop. Mr. Charlton has to do the counting of strawberrys. He meets a girl and he likes her very much, Mariette sees this and gets angry with the girl. When Mariette and the girl meet eachother again in the field, they start fighting for Mr. Charlton. He, however, doesn’t know that they are fighting for him and tries to separate the two girls. That evening, Mr. Charlton and Mariette go for a stroll in the moonlight. When they got back, a doctor had arrived, Pop had ordered him to, to run a test on Mr. Charlton to check if he suffers from lumbago, since they had been strawberry-picking and it was a very common disease to strawberry-pickers. The doctor concludes that Mr. Charlton isn’t diseased or anything, but writes out a form so Mr. Charlton can stay at home, better said; at Pops’ and Ma’s home.

The next day, they decide to have a cocktail party that afternoon and evening. They ask Mr. Charlton about what they should do about the cocktail party, because no one of the Larkin family had ever been to one. Mr. Charlton sais that they don’t need any tough drinks, but just light ones. Pop decides to have both tough and light drinks. At the party, Mariette and Mr. Charlton, called Charley by the family, decide to get married. Pop and Ma decide, after hearing this, that they should marry again.
