Summary
In an old car are three people. The driver is a broad-shouldered, dark-haired young guy, called Martin Bell. Beside him sits a young, attractive girl, named Anne Grey. The one in the back seat is a fair-haired young man, called Peter Crossley. They drove to the top of the hill, because they want to see the biggest waterfall. They park their car op a parking place a walked further to the waterfall. When they are next to the waterfall said Martin that his father wants to build a dam and the waterfall will disappear. A man came after a near-by rock and said that nobody can build a dam because they can’t stop De River from flowing.
The man showed them why they can’t build a dam. He jumps on a boulder en smashed it in the water. The boulder fall have the waterfall edge and splits into two pieces. The strange man walked down through a rocky path. Martin, Peter and Anne went back to the car and on the way they speak to each other. Peter and Martin studying at the university of Hilton. Peter has past his exams. Peter want to work by Martin’s father with Martin and build the Valhome dam. When they were by the car, they jump in it and drove to the village of Val home.
In Valhome was in the evening a discussion about the dam. Martin, Peter and Anne went to the discussion on the market place. The chairman said that Mr. Sutton and Mr. Field will explain too the people about their plan. Mr. Sutton said that everybody must move on too Valbay. There will be new houses build with electricity. The government will pay the houses. If people don’t want to go too Valbay, then they can have money compensation. Then a man stand up and shouted: ”You can’t do it”. Anne recognizes the voice. She heard the voice by the waterfall. And she looked to the man and he was the same man as the man in the mountains. The man was Jim Mossop. He explains why and then everybody talk at the same time. The chairman raised his hand but hardly anyone saws it. Then he sad something to Mr. Sutton and he shouted trough the microphone. He said that everybody could have a copy of compensation arrangements. The discussion was closed and Martin showed Peter and Anne the model of the dam. Martin explains why the power station is under the ground. After explaining other details of the dam, Martin took Peter and Anne to talk to Mr Field. Martin says too Mr Field that Peter wants to join the company. Anne asked if Mr Field have a job for her too. He asked what her experience is and she said that she is a first-class shorthand typist and she had taken a short course in nursing. Mr Field like that kind of girls and that she can come. Mr Field says also that it would be a hard job. After speaking with Mr Field they went back too their car. But they can’t get away, because other cars surrounded their car.
Three week later. Peter went to school to see his results. He had passed with Second Class Honours and he was now a B.Sc. (Bachelor of Science). That evening peter phoned his father about his results. That same evening peter wrote a letter to Mr Field at the Bell and Field engineering company too gets a job. A week later Peter received a registered letter and he may come for an interview. Peter felt very doubtful about his chances of getting the job with Bell and Field Company. A week later he received a letter from Mr Bell, Martin’s father. Mr Bell asked or Peter can come to his office on the first July. On the first July was the first time that Peter met Martin’s father. They speak about how Martin and Peter met. Peter asked too Mr Bell if he had a change to get the job. Mr Bell said that he could have the job.
Three days later Peter met Anne at the café and he told the good news. Anne said that she’s got the job too. A few days later Peter received a letter from Bell and Field. Now he official had a job. He wrote a letter back en he wrote that he could come as soon as possible. The same day Anne received a letter too and if she could start to work as soon as possible.
Anne and peter were traveling together. The first part of the journey was about eight hours by train. In the train they met two engineers: Bill Simpson, a road engineer, and Mario Bertolini, an explosives expert. After the train they must travel by bus to the engineering camp. Bill Simpson said that this was a dangerous road, because there are landslides. Before they came by the camp there was a landslide. Heavy rocks came down and when it stops the bus surrounded by rocks. They shall have to walk the rest of the way. Martin saw people walking slowly up the road. Martin went quickly too Peter and Anne. Peter said too Martin what was happen too them.
The next morning they went to Mr Field. Mr Field welcomes them all. Mr Field said to everybody what the must do. Anne was Mr Field’s secretary. After the conversation Anne must take the phone’s up and tied up the office. When the time was up she went too the restaurant. After her lunch she met Peter and Martin in the lounge en talk about their first day.
After the first day Peter and Martin works on the Valhome New Town. There were build 2 power stations too and the east cofferdam. Bill Simpson work on his way that begins from the train station too the top of the hill. Three months later they have a conversation with Mr Bell. Mr Bell explains the plan of the Volhome dam. Bill Simpson is almost ready with his road.
Valhome New Town consists of shops, cafés, a post office, a restaurant, a hospital, a cinema and two power stations near the dam. The power stations bring the city electricity. On a summer evening Martin, Peter and Anne were at a café in Valhome village. They said they wanted to persuade Jim Mossop. One of the young farmers in the café heard the talk and said that Jim was building his new house halfway up the mountain. Anne wants to visit him now but peter says they better go on Sunday. Sunday Martin, Peter and Anne packed some water and foot and walked to the place where Jim Mossop his new house builds. The asked if he needs some help and next Sunday they were with 4 people to make Jim Mossop’s house. After 3 weeks the house is done. A week later the must move boulders from the grass.
The summer was passing quickly and the east side of the Valhome dam was nearly clear. The river hasn’t change anything, until the rains came two weeks earlier than usual. The level of the river began to rise quickly. The workmen work faster than normal, because the river may not be higher than the dam, or the dam will be disappear. On a day a workman phoned up Anne and said that there is a crack in the cover dam. Anne ran to Mr Field and they went to the dam. The crack stretched from top to bottom. The center of the cover dam collapsed and disappeared below the water. The rest of the dam is strong and can’t move away.
Autumn and winter has past and on a night Peter and Martin heard a strange noise. They think it was a landslide and went out of their tent and went to the dam. The dam didn’t have a scratch, so far they could see, but the old village does. Anne saw a big boulder in the river near the dam. Mr Field asked too Martin and Peter if they would try to put a steel cable round the boulder. It wouldn’t be an easy job but they agree.
There was a skip hanging above the water. Martin and Peter must on the skip to go too the boulder. They put the steel cable around the boulder and went back to the bank. The cable was tight on two tractors. But the cable slipped of the boulder and came in the water. There was now a net on the cable. The cable was already tight on two tractors. Martin and peter went back on the skip and take the net with them. The moved the net around the boulder and Martin get back on the skip, but Peter fell of the boulder. Martin jumps after him and put his arm around him. It looks like peter injured. Suddenly there was a landslide again. All the people was happy, because the lived. One of the boulders hit the underground power station. There was no light and the skip didn’t work without electricity. Than there came a man and he’s walked trough the water too Martin and Peter. The man was Jim Mossop. He put the net accurate around the boulder so the boulder can’t move. Jim took Martin and Peter with him when he walked back to the bank. Jim, Peter and Martin were brought too the hospital. Anne took a visit too peter who has broken his leg. The dam was finished and Martin Peter and Anne are waiting to go too south Africa for a new dam.
