Pete and Carla are both students at the University of Bath. One day in summer they are walking round the city. They are going into a little street behind the Abbey of Bath. A man is playing the flute and they are listening to it. Carla puts a coin in the man’s hat, there are only four coins in it.
Then they decide to look for some very old coins and stamps in a shop. Pete wants to buy some, but they’re too expensive.
Later that afternoon they are going to drink something at a table outside the café next to the shop. Then they hear the old man from the shop right behind them. He shouts: ‘Where are my coins? They are missing. Did you steal them?’ But they didn’t steal the coins.
A policeman watches Carla, Pete and the shopkeeper and he goes to them. The shopkeeper explains what was happening. Carla and Pete say that they didn’t steal the coins. Then the policeman looks in the their bags, but he doesn’t find the coins.
Suddenly Carla remembers the flute player. She thinks she know where the coins are. Then they run to the flute player. He just wants to walk away, but the policeman stops him. Then they see the coins in the hat of the man. He has stolen them!
She saw the coins in the hat of the man, but she didn’t know they were that valuable. As a gift of finding the coins, Pete gets the stamps from South America, so he can start his own stamp collection! Now he’s very happy and he thanks Carla for it.
