A young man called John Harmon stood alone on the deck of ship sailing up the River Thames. His father is dead. John inherited all his father’s money but only if he agreed to marry a girl called Bella Wilfer. Then Harmon would hide for a time and find out what of girl Bella was. That plan he has made the same with George Radfoot, a sailor on the ship.
A man called Jesse Hexam and his daughter, Lizzie goes to the river. They hold body’s of drowned man out of the river to take the money of them. The river gives them food and drink. They bind the body at the end of the rope and it followed after the boat.
Mr. Mortimer Lightwood and Mr. Eugene Wrayburn were lawyers and they had been fiends since their schooldays. They had very little money. There was a knock on the door. A boy, Charley, the brother of Lizzie, stood in the doorway. He brings the message that the story of John Harmon was ends. He has been found in the river-drowned! The dead man was identified as Mr. John Harmon, the body had been in the river for some days. It had not been drowned, but murdered. Who had killed him?
Charley Hexam goes to a better school. His new schoolmaster was Mr. Bradley Headstone, a man of twenty-six.
Now John Harmon was dead, all his father’s money went to the old servant, Noddy Boffin.
He and his wife were simple but honest and kind people. They are moving into a bigger house. They need a secretary he called John Rokesmith. They ask to Bella Wilfer of she will make her home with them. And she gives her permission.
Rogue Riderhood gives the information that the man who done the Harmon murder was Jesse Hexam. When they found the boat of Hexam, he had his neck caught in his own rope. He was dead.
Mr. Bradley Headstone has fallen in love with Lizzie Hexam and Mr. Eugene Wrayburn also. Now Bradley was torn by his jealousy of Eugene.
Mr. Julius Handford, and Handford was Rokesmith, and Rokesmith was…John Harmon, goes to Roque Riderhood house in the clothes of George Radfoot to tell him that Jesse Hexam had taken no part in the Harmon murder.
George Radfoot, the man he had met on the ship, had taken him to Rogue Riderhood. ‘Riderhood sells sailors clothes,’ Radfoot had told him. ‘They will help to disguise yourself.’ He remembers there was some fighting and he was knocked down. A much later, he was in the river. He was drowning. He got out of the water. He was wearing Radfoot’s clothes. He stayed in a hotel for twelve days using the name Handford. So everyone thought John Harmon was dead, but it was George Radfoot. Julius Handford became John Rokesmith, Mr. Boffin’s secretary.
When Mr. Boffin Mr. Rokesmith send away because he was in love with Miss. Bella. Bella goes after him and they marry.
When Mr. Hardstone try to murder Mr. Eugene Wrayburn he wear the same clothes as Rogue to appear that Mr. Rogue Riderhood was the murder. But Lizzie save the live of Mr. Eugene Wrayburn and marry to him.
Then Mr. Hardstone goes to Rogue. When Rogue says he can better stop his live. Bradley caught him and they drowned together.
When John Harmon see Mr. Mortimer, his father’s lawyer, the completely story pop up and John Harmon lives again! Old John Harmon’s money has turned bright at last.
