Title: Great Expectations
Number of pages: 108
Summary:
The story is about Pip: A young orphan who’s living with his older sister and her husband Joe in Kent. One day Pip meets a convict, who orders him to bring him food and a file; Pip is scared to death, because the convict starts to threaten him.
One day Pip is taken to Satis House, where the rich Miss Havisham lives with a beautiful young girl named Estella. Pip falls in love with Estella.
When Pip, his sister and his brother-in-low Joe Gragery (a blacksmith) are eating, Mr. Jaggers comes. He is a lawyer, and has big news. An unknown benefactor has given Pip a fortune, so he can be a gentleman. He has to go with the lawyer to London, where his lessons ‘how to be a gentleman’ will be given. Pip goes to London, but first he says goodbye to Miss Havisham and Estella.
When Pip is a gentleman he feels to good for his family and old friends. He treats them coldly, especially Joe, because he is just a blacksmith. Only Estella treats he the same, ‘cause he has still a weak for her. Many years later Pip meets the unknown benefactor. He is really frightened; because the benefactor is the convict he met many years before. The convict, named Magwitch, made Pip a gentleman, because he feels he owes him that for giving him food so he didn’t had to go back to jail, and could make a fortune. Eventually Pip loses his fortune and Estella marries another man.
Pip finds out that Magwitch is the father of Estella. Magwitch thought she was dead.
Pip goes to Cairo to make money. When he returns many years later, he visits the Satis House. He discovers that Estella lives here now. She had been married, but her husband had treated her badly and luckily for her, he died soon. Pip and Estella talk things over, and finally they came to the conclusion that they really like each other.
a) i) The main character is Pip. He is seen through his complete life. Pip becomes a boy with great expectations when a benefactor adopts him. He is a nice person, who is always kind to everyone. He also wants to satisfy the people around him. When he grows up, he turns out to be a tall and hansom man. He falls in love with the beautiful Estella. Finally he finds out which persons are his real friends and which just want to have some profit.
ii) Pip and Estella: Pip likes Estella very much and she is also very pretty. At first Estella isn’t so found of Pip and hurts Pip by not returning his love, but in the end Pip and Estella finally come together.
b) i) A part of the story takes place in the house of Mrs. Havisham. It’s a very old house and it isn’t very clean, everything is very dusty and there is no light in the rooms.
ii) The other part of the story takes place outdoors in London, nearby the river where Pip lives. It’s a very nice town and it’s also very crowded with lots of people.
d) Love: Pip is clearly in love with Estella
Family: Pip lost his parents and lived with his sister and her man, but then he has to leave them to become a gentlemen.
Loneliness: Pip wants to be with Estella and the family, but he can’t, so sometimes he’s very lonely.
e) i) The time covered in the book are thirty or thirty-five years. The book starts when Pip is a little boy and at the end his all grown up.
ii) The story is chronological and starts from the beginning. There are no flashbacks, only people tell something about someone’s past.
f) The most interesting part of the book is when Pip finds out who the benefactor is. When he finds out that it’s Provis: the man he knew when he was young. He also finds out that Provis is Estella’s father.
g) i) The story is told by Pip.
ii) The narrator is an active participant.
i) The story isn’t attractive to read when you start reading it. It a very long introduction which could get boring, so I didn’t like the book very much, the film is much better. I wouldn’t recommend the book.
