We hebben 5 exemplaren van Road To Revolution, de nieuwe live dvd van Linkin Park, om weg te geven!

A. In general
1. The titel of the book is Sense and Sensibility.
2. The author is Jane Austen.
3. The book was first published in 1811. My book was printed in 1994.

B. The contents of the book
1. The story is mainly a lovestory, about Marianne and Elinor Dashwood trying to find happiness and love. The book is also about the growing-up of two women, and how they have to face al kinds of problems, for instance getting used to a different economical situation (when Mr. Dashwood dies, he leaves his money to his first wife's son, John Dashwood. His second wife and her daughters, Marianne, Elinor and Margaret, have to move out.) Another theme in the book is friendship, the friendship between the two sisters with their very different characters.

2a. The beginning of the story takes place in Norland Park, Sussex. The Dashwoods move to a cottage near Barton Park, Sir John’s property. Marianne and Elinor also stay in London and at the estates of the Palmers in Cleveland, Somerset for a while.

2b. The story takes partly place in a town (London), and partly in the country.

3a. The Dashwoods live in a rich environment.

3b. Marianne and Elinor are well educated, especially Elinor, who reads a lot.

3c. I didn’t notice any religious interests.

4. The story takes place in the 19th century.

5. I think the story did not really happen, but it’s realistic enough that it could have happened.

6. The profagonists are Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.

7. Elinor and Marianne are sisters.

8. I think they’re both heroines, for they had to move out of their home, got broken hearts, and still managed to be brave and they didn’t complain about their problems.

9. I like Marianne and Elinor, because they both have traits I can relate to.

10. I think that when Lucy’s older sister (both acquaintances of the Dashwoods) accidentally reveals the news of Lucy's secret engagement to Edward Ferrars. At the same time, Marianne is anxious to be reunited with her beloved Willoughby, but when she sees him at a party in town, he cruelly denies her and then sends her a letter denying that he ever had feelings for her. Colonel Brandon tells Elinor of Willoughby's history with Eliza (Willoughby got her pregnant), and Mrs. Jennings confirms that Willoughby, because he's left with no money, has become engaged to the wealthy Miss Grey. At this point, the truth is revealed about Willoughby and Edward. It’s the turning-point in the story.

11. Yes, I believe it stands for the way Marianne and Elinor act. Marianne's sensibility is very strong, she always follows her heart. She’s an emotional person. Elinor obeys her reason, her sense. She "thinks" about her emotions and she always controls them. The title stands for Elinor (Sense) and Marianne (Sensibility).

12. Elinor always controls her feelings of sadness and anxiety and is quite calm. She keeps her feelings to herself. That’s why she doesn’t tell about her affection for Edward Ferrars and her grief when she finds out he’s engaged to Lucy Steele. Marianne talks openly about her feelings. Her behaviour changes a lot after she heard the news that her beloved Willoughby is going to marry another woman. She changes from being cheerful and passionate to quiet, sad and lovesick.

C. The form of the book
1. It’s a novel.

2a. The story is a unity without any interruption.

2b. Most of the time the author tells a lot about the surroundings

3. No, the author is not the “I”, and there are no diary-fragments or letters in the book. The book is written in the third person. It is told through the eyes of the narrator

4. I don’t think there are elements like those in the book, I sometimes even find the dialogues a bit monotonous.

5. The story is humorous, tragical and satirical. It’s humorous and sometimes satirical because Austen minutely describes snobbery, bourgeois morality and hypocrisy. The novel has a very modern and realistic character, I think that’s because it’s based on everyday life.

6. I think the emphasis of the book is on the characters.

D. The Author
1. She lived from 1775 untill 1817. She lived in Steventon, Bath, Chawton and Winchester (not all at the same time of course).

2. I think that Jane Austen can’t be compared to any of her contemporaries. I cannot put her in a category, because she writes romantic stories, but in a realistic way. Does that mean she’s a romantic and a realistic writer?

3. Austen represents the opinion that people should not look down on another person.

4. A and C.

E. My opinion
1. What struck me most was that Willoughby was getting married to another woman. He really loved Marianne, and I didn’t think he would marry someone else just for her money. I also couldn’t believe that he got a girl pregnant, and then just walked away.

2. No, unfortunately not! I don’t live on a big estate or in a nice house in London.

3. I really loved the book, because I could feel empathy for Marianne and Elinor. At times I found the book very funny, because it carped on the behaviour of the English elite in a very humorous way.
