Lorna Doone is a story about love. But the love doesn’t come easy.
John Ridd tells the story:
I left school on the 29th of November, 1673. A man said to me looking at my fathers farm: “This is all for you now.” My father had been killed by the Doones.
In 1640 ( 13 years before I left school) there were two men who had great lands. Their names were: Lord Lorne and Sir Ensor Doone. They were quarrelling with each other. Sir Ensor Doone took a flight to a corner of England. At first the Doones lived peacefully. But then the Doones began to steal from the farmers. And the people began to hate them. I too hated them, but I was only a boy when my father died. I made myself ready for the day when I would kill Carver Doone, the man who had killed my father.
One day I didn’t catch many fish. I went up to the Doone valley and found many fishes. Then I came by a place of high rocks and trees who shut out the daylight. I was afraid of these trees and rocks and the noise of the water. But I had to go on. I climbed up the face of the rock, up and up. Then I felt on the grass and I felt the fresh air.
A beautiful girl woke me up. Her name was Lorna Doone, one of the family who had killed my father. She said they would kill me, if they found me here. Because I’d found the secret way to the Doone valley. Then there was a shout. She led me to a secret hole and I was save.
Then seven years passed, and I grew up and became a young man. A young man who dreamt about a beautiful little girl.
My mothers brother, uncle Reuben, was very rich. Every year, he used to come to us for New Year’s Day. One New Year’s Day he didn’t come. We thought the Doones had our uncle. I had to look for him and found him. Uncle Reuben visited the judge. But they laughed of his story and didn’t believe him. Uncle Reuben wanted to see the Doone valley. I looked at the secret hole and saw someone, small and beautiful. It was Lorna Doone. And my heart was very hard beating.
I began to think of another visit to Lorna Doone. It was now easier to come there then more than seven years ago. I had grown much bigger. While I was enjoying the sights and sounds of nature, I heard the sweetest sound I’ve ever heard. It was the voice of Lorna. And I saw the loveliest sight of my life. Then she saw me too, and she looked afraid. I would go away. And at home I dreamt and dreamt about the only girl who can make my heart beat harder.
After two weeks Lorna told me her story. She was very lonely, because she wasn’t different from the seem as her bloody family.
One day, a man came hungry to me. His name was Jeremy Stickles, servant of the King. He gave me an order of the King’s judge. I had to go to London and there I had to tell about the Doones and what they were doing.
I went to London. Judge said to me: “Keep away from the Doones and from Lord Wichehalse.” But I couldn’t keep away from the Doones, because then I had to keep away from Lorna.
Lorna told me that they would make her marry to Carver Doone or to Charlie Doone. She was afraid.
Two months later I went to Lorna. And there I saw Carver, my concurrent. And I hoped that my chance, to kill him, came early.
In October I told Lorna about my love. And she said she loved me too, but she believed we never could be married.
There were three openings to go to the Doones valley. And only the Doones knew which was the right one. I choose the middle opening. Then I saw two men who were guarding this place. They were quarrelling. I went to Lorna, but a watchman saw me. I began to sing a song which I’d heard Charlie sing. And the watchman went back to his place.
A couple of days later, I heard a plan to kill Jeremy Stickles. I went to Jeremy to save him. And he had to wait, three Doones were to strong for us to fight: “We must sooner fight to them, but not now,” he said.
Next day Jeremy told me why he had come here: “ I was send to learn how people were making ready to fight and also I must make plans against the Doones to drive them out.” When I heard that I was afraid for Lorna.
In the middle of December I had to go to Sir Ensor Doone. He wanted to see me, before he died. He said, I wasn’t a rich farmer and Lorna came of one of the best families of England. I had to promise never see Lorna again. But I couldn’t. Lorna gave me her old ring and the necklace to save me.
Lorna was hungry. And I brought her a piece of bread. Carver didn’t let her out until she married him. I promised her, I took her to my home. When I came back to Lorna I had to keep two men away until I Lorna could be taken. She laid with closed eyes, but her little hand found its way into mine.
Lorna gave the necklace to my mother, for her kindness.
Carver Doone had to come to say he would kill Lorna and me when she didn’t came tomorrow back to the Doone valley.
We had eight man with guns and the other had sticks and knives. I hoped that I might kill Carver with my own hands. After some time said someone to me: “ The Doones have crossed the stream over there.” A little time later I took Carver hold of his beard. He tried to point his gun at me, but I was too quick. Seeing their leader down the others ran away. So ended the Battle of the Farm-yard.
One evening the Counsellor visited Lorna. He told Lorna and me that Lorna’s father killed mine father and mine father killed her father. But we didn’t believe him. The next night the Counsellor took Lorna’s necklace away, with him.
That same night Jeremy came back. And he told me a story witch told that the Counsellor lied. The story told that Lorna was not a Doone. But a stolen girl. She was a Dugal, she came of a family of lords. She was a daughter of Lord Dugal. Carver could never marry her, but maybe I never too.
We had a plan to kill the Doones, but things did not happen as we had planned. There were three groups: Somerset men, Devon men and we. But the Somerset men and the Devon men began to fight to each other. The Doones attacked the Somerset men. The Devon men pulled their cannon home. And so ended the battle.
When I came back, Lady Lorna Dugal has gone to London.
For many months no letters came from Lorna. The soldiers told me that Lorna was already famous of her beauty. I was very sad and felt that I had lost all hope.
Some days later I saved Tom, the husband of Annie ( my sister). I sent him to home I found him inside a hut. I lay down in the hut and slept. When I woke up I saw twenty soldiers. They would kill me, but they couldn’t. I could get away, but soon I was caught by another lot of men. They would hang me up, but Jeremy saved me from them.
I went with Jeremy to London. And so we rode to London, I thought of Lorna. In the church I saw her and she me. She looked at me whit her gentle and sweet eyes. Gwenny, Lorna’s servant, had hidden al the letters who had Lorna written to me.
An evening in September I saw three men waiting in the shadows by Lorna’s uncle house. They were thieves. I saved Lorna’s uncle, Lord Brandir and I had to go to the King and he made me Sir John Ridd.
When I came back, not with Lorna, work went as before and as before too, the Doones came out, stole and killed.
We had to do battle again. We thought out a guile. And everyone was killed, except Carver. Carver jumped on to his great horse and rode away.
Lorna came back from London and everything was arranged for our marriage. When I put the ring on her finger there was a sound of a shot. Blood was upon her white dress. I knew who it was: Carver. I went out and said to myself: “ It’s Carver’s life or mine.” We fought. I threw him away from me and said: “ I won’t harm you anymore. You’re beaten, I forgive you.” But his feet had gone into the marsh and slowly he went down into the marsh; .....out of sight.
I took Carver’s little boy, Endie, with me. I could think of nothing but Lorna’s death. At home I fell of my horse and said that I’d killed Carver and Lorna. But my mother replied that Lorna lived. For days Lorna lay between life and death and I laid ill in bed. Then the door opened and there was Lorna, my Lorna.
And so the story ends, yet ends never. For year by year Lorna’s beauty and kindness grow, and our love and happiness grow with it.
